There is no particular reason to kill the monks. In fact, they are very helpful later on, which the duergar most definitely are not.

Helpful? Later on? What do they help with later? Do I need them later in the game? Somebody else told that you can kill the monks first and then go back to duergar and kill them, without any penalty later on?

I had to kill all them duergars as a result of paladin dialogue options :D

Of course I didn't take the quest to kill the monks. I even slaughtered another group of duergars who were trying to assault the monastery from deep below.

Later in, monks were indeed useful. I believe they wouldn't cooparate with you if you had killed off their brethren in the monastery.

Anyway, it's perfectly possible to finish the game either way.

Could you be more specific? At least tell me where they re-appear (in which chapter/place) so I can read that part from the walkthrough and see if I should play otherwise. Thank you.

You can kill all the monks in the monastery, the prisoned monks in Severed hand will never find out. After all, they are prisoned.

The "help" that we are talking about is that three or four of them helps you in the end battle against Isair and Madae.

    [IMG] Thanks.

IMHO IWD2 really stinks as a "roleplay" - it doesn't matter how you deal with things or how you answer to people - they often even answer the same way whatever your choise of dialogue was. Only few things are effected by the nature of your character and you really don't have a choise on how to complete the game - you can only choose what optional quests to complete alongside the main story.
Fallout 2 was something I call roleplay.

Sunfire was really effective at killing the monks.

I've often wondered if they wondered what was going on when a stoneskinned, mirror imaged, sorcerer walked into the middle of their training room and started to cast a spell?

I slaughtered the monks after helping them, then went back and got the rewards from the duergars, and then I slaughtered the duergars.

    Yes, I'm evil, I know.
