    Unbelievable.

An amendment to strike school segregation from Alabama state law is defeated.

And these are the values Democrats have "lost touch with?" Good freaking riddance...

What can one say for advocates who have so little regard for education? Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Franklin all put education near the top of government's role in policy making. But then we are talking about Alabama....

I find this astonishing. So much for the "land of the free".

It is the land of the free as long as the people are caucasion males that own their own land and are protestants. :)

Ah well, while they teached us to respect minorities like jews after the war and that racism was wrong, the US were pretty much oblivious to the fact that they had race segregation at home and jewish quotas at their ivy league universities.
Clearly, they were about the best occupation force one could wish for after such a defeat but still ...

In today's America guys like judge Renquist, who wrote legal statements defending segregation, still are in office - despite their racism and reactionary mindset. But then, it took Germany some 35 years to get rid of their surplus nazis that lived on in public life despite their past. Some things take time to change, have patience.

Prejudice is taught. It will take generations to tear down some of the walls (sins of the fathers kind of thing).

    It's not just a red/blue issue.

If you read carefully, near the end of the article,

Fours years ago, that was 2000, the new millennium, South Africa had already long passed this segregation madness.

Those type of laws are everywhere in America. Really ridiculous laws which should have been stricken long ago -- like you can't leave your horse tied to a post for more than a day. In Missouri a law was repealed ten years ago which stated a Mormon could be shot on sight.

Stating interracial marriage was against the law in some state is meaningless -- the law hasn't been enforced in decades.

Well, in defense of Alabama, many of these state laws don't really mean anything, as they are trumped by federal law. Famously, schools were de-segregated in Alabama in 1963 when JFK basically took control of the Alabama National Guard from the Governor of Alabama, and used these troops to force schools to admit black students. So, while the state laws regarding segregation never changed, the de facto situation did with the enforcement of federal law. Likewise, while state law in Alabama might not have allowed mixed marriages until recently, I'm pretty sure this ban wasn't enforced.

Another, very different, confrontation vs. state and federal law is taking place right now in the supreme court over the medical use of marijuana, legal in the state of California, but banned by federal law. The background of case actually involved a three-hour standoff between California police officers and federal agents over the rights of a California woman to grow marijuana for her own use (and with a medical prescription) to ease pain associated with a brain tumor. The federal agents ended up destroying her six plants...

We had something different in Germany, to a degree. In the constitution of our state Bavaria the death penalty remained as a sanction until a few years ago - even though it was explicitly banned by out German federal constitution for nearly 50 years already.
It slept unused there because it was unuseable as a result of the primacy of federal law in Germany.

But that's something else than the utterances of that Christion Coalition leader, which are just priceless in characterising him.
