    [IMG] So I'm continuing ot play SOU and having a grand olde time. Well this morning little snook was watching me for a bit and decided that he could probably handle this game (he is 9). This got me thinking about multiplayer. For years we have been playing Diablo 2 over our home network. I just used a simple "No-CD" hack and we have been having a ton of fun.

    Will that work with NWN or have they gotten more sophisticated since then? If I can't do it this way, I'm guessing I could buy the Platinum edition to go with my Gold edition plus expansion. It just seems wrong to me to have to buy the same game twice.

    Do you need special multiplayer modules or can you actually play any module in a multi-player mode? Does the difficulty ramp up like in D2?

    Any other thoughts on multiplayer would be appreciated, like is it fun?

    You know that little CD key you had to enter when you installed it? Well, that's used during multiplayer to be sure each player has a legal version of the game; it doesn't let you play if that CD key is already in use.

    I believe the OC and SoU are made for multiplayer, but I seem to recall HotU was not. But I'm not sure what the difference is; I believe every module is playable multiplayer, but perhaps certain circumstances don't work out great if they weren't designed with multiplayer in mind.

    I'm guessing it doesn't matter if it is over the internet or on a lan? That is too bad, I wasn't really planning on buying another copy.

    One of the first things I will do if I hit the lottery is challenge software EULAs in court. But, that is more a topic for the alley. :)

    In HotU, certain scene transitions will only transport the "dialogue" character from one place to the next.

    Yeah, that sucks. Copyrights suck as they are now. To buy the game once again to be able to play on LAN with your own son in your own house... ridiculous. Eerrr... do we happen to be in agreement or what? :eek:

    This might not be too honest (tho it cannot damage BW either), but I think just installing NWN, patching and then playing WHILE THE COMPUTERS CANNOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET might work.

    (IIRC it verifies the multiplayer game CD keys trough the BW server - therefore, if you don't let it connect, it can't verify your CD key - you cannot play on internet servers but LAN _MIGHT_ work.)
    (Disabling it accessing the internet via a software firewall will block LAN too, so that doesn't work.)

    What a pain. In order to get this work I need to unplug the router from the lan. I'm going to have to rethink this. I may have to see if I can borrow a buddies copy of the game to load. I know he plays only single player so it should work.

    In my opinion it's not ridiculous. A license to a piece of software is the same as buying a copy of a book. You cannot have two people reading the same book at the same time in two different places in your house, but you can take turns reading it. Same thing.

    @BTA,

    I'm not sure I buy that arguement.

    @Taza,

    Would I have to block both machines or just one?

    Really? Why not?

    Suppose you had a machine that would make an identical copy of any book you put into it for next to nothing. Would you think it was OK to make copies of a book for family and friends?

    Not that I would care if you did, or even say that I wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't think it was legal.

    So I can understand companies trying to protect their rights by making it not so cheap and easy to get away with something that is really not legal.

    Well, I do not know if copying a game to play with a family member is really not legal -it might fall under the fair use interpretation.

    Companies (media companies especially) generally try to impose as much restrictions as possible on how to use their product. It is understandable up to a point; having N people copy a CD and use it is wrong (from a legal as well as a moral viewpoint :) but consumers have some rights too).
