Just an idea that a rookie (ME) thought of and am experimenting with now.
i started a dwarf warrior, half elf(i think) fighter/cleric, human druid. my druid was killed early in the adventure in the orc caves and i decided to let her rest there and moved on with my 2 fighters. after i moved on to the goblin farm i started a bard, and to make a long story short next started a ranger, then added a thief a little later.
it's seemed to work well so far, i got my fighters to a higher lvl quickly to protect the others later, and now they're all around the same lvl as the others have caught up to the fighters(the fighter cleric is a little behind obviously. that is one reason i chose to make him part of my small starting party) anyway, any thoughts on other strategys for party creation?

Start them all at once. I mean the only adventage is less people to split the XP is that so important to you. I suggest having 2 to 3 fighter type for the front line. At least 1 healer, maybe 2 and a magic-user and a thief. How you mix these is the beauty of the game. With HoW and the new download there is more than enough XP in the game so don't worry about that issue.

    Did that help at all?

trying starting as many characters out as you can as fighters. then dual class them to mage, thief and cleric. most people will tell you to dual at lvl 7 or lvl 9, but I dont like to wait that long. you need a thief pretty early, and when your mage gets to a high enough level, you really dont need the fighting abiltiy too much. its just nice to be able to fire a bow instead of a sling.
