    IMO, it's really hard to believe that anyone voted for this guy to continue on as mayor of NO. He has to be one of the worst mayors in history. But given some of those others who are continuing on in their roles in government, at all levels, and despite their incompetence, it should not be a big surprise.

    I think he should be forced to resign if he can't come through on his promise of a chocolate New Orleans. Building an entire city out of dessert would be enough of an accomplishment to let him keep the post. :roll:

    I can understand it, even if I don't think it's wise. People almost always go back to the incumbent in hard times, even if their leadership has been disastrous. I noted that Nagin resorted to the "stay the course" argument... now where have I heard that one before? Oh, that's right - after the WTC and Pentagon attacks, and the "Children Overboard" BS (Australia), during the Iraq insurgencies (USA), and again from Mr Howard & Co. in late 2004.

    And around the world, there will be people channelling Homer Simpson and thinking, "Mmmm... land of chocolate..."

    NS, at least Rudy offered some leadership and did everything he could to help. Nagin just wanted the feds to do it all. There is no comparison of the two.

    Nagin is black, and from everything I have heard, the vote pretty much divided right along racial lines. Since most of NO is black... well no big surprise he got re-elected.

    Actually, I wasn't thinking of Guiliani. The WTC reference was more to do with the election in Australia around that time, and the tactics used by the incumbent government to retain power.

    I agree, though - based on what little I know of Nagin, I don't think it's accurate to compare him to Guiliani (except in the sense that something terrible happened while they were mayors of their respective cities). I think Aldeth may have hit the nail on the head, as brutally honest as it is.

    I saw a white lady from NO talk about it last night. Apparently there was a lot of "solidarity" among the black population, but she indicated Nagin was just more polished and had more answers as the incumbent and the other guy just didn't distinguish himself enough from Nagin.

    It's getting really sad these days that horrible people are voted into office simply because their opposition is just as bad and people are either apathetic because of that, or vote for the devil they know. *sigh*

    Amen to that, BTA. What I wouldn't give for a truly democratic political system, or at least a breath of fresh air (ie: a competent candidate who appears to have the courage of their convictions and will accept responsibility for their government's policies).

    In Australia, the problem is generally that the opposition isn't seen as a credible alternative. Either that, or they get someone like Mark Latham as a potential prime minister, which scares people into the arms of the incumbent.
