    The eponymous character of the show is a middle-class divorced father of two with a crippling mortgage.

    Mmm going for the fourth.

    Clue 1: The daughter is alergic to just about everything.

    Clue 2: The nine year old son has already been held back in school for three years and has a tendancy to put everything in his mouth.

    Bored now...

    Clue 3: The father regularly gets strangled by the vein on his temple which gets bigger and bigger as the episode proceeds.

    Clue 4: The Au-pair is a drunken sot called Maria.

    Much, much closer -- the lead in this show is arguably THE most famous American male comedian over the past 40 years (so Evening Shade would also be wrong).

    This is a huge hint -- not many comedians can lay claim to that (a 40-year timespan as a top comedian). Is Cedric the Entertainer even over 40?

    Ok, I admit I didn't read your hint properly, and now I think about it, that show was about a music teacher (Steve Harvey); the gym teacher (Cedric) was a minor character. I thought you refered to Steve Harvey as the greatest comedian (not in my book, but hey, tastes in humor vary)
