    I've read previous threads about countering adware and have followed the advice. I got Adaware, SpyBot and what have you. I was able to remove the damn stuff from my laptop but now the popups are back but without the ads. It has the, "The page cannot be displayed message." While there is no ad, the popups ar irritating. Can anyone help?

    I already have it. It cut down my problems except for the ones I mentioned.

    @Tal,

    The popups are the same ones I used to get, like protect your PC and the like. The difference is that the ad is gone and replaced by a page that looks like a site that you cannot access. The type that says hit the refresh button. While the ads are gone, the empty popups are still there. I can't work if they popup every minute.

    @Sarevok,

    Apparently, it was already disabled.

    Adware and Spybot are good free tools.

    I also recommend downloading Microsoft Antispyware Beta. I have a few friends who work in support roles and this picks up things not found by the above.
    Also try Hijackthis - this will show you exactly what processes and services are running on your machine. If you are unsure of any of them google them and it should give you some background on how to remove them. Some forums have people who will examine you hijackthis log and tell you what to do. Don't ask me though - I'm by no means an expert. Make sure you create a restore point before you go removing anything. ;)

    Charlie, where are you getting the pop-ups? We don't remember what you wrote in your previous thread. Why didn't you bring that one up if this one is a continuation?

    Oh, I didn't post in the previous thread. I checked the old thread and followed the advice there. I didn't start a new thread because we are encouraged to look for similar threads before starting a new one. Everything worked out well but recently they've been coming back and has recently worsened. I used to get blank popups, probably due to the anti spyware programs I use but now they're no longer blank. I don't notice what sites but one just popped out now. It's warning that me that spyware might be damaging my computer. It's http://e.rn11.com.

    Uh, then they're regular pop-up advertising from some site. Could even be SP. You don't have to block it just because it's a pop-up. It's no more sinister than any other advertising. And sites like SP depend on that advertising revenue to pay the bills.

    Best advice I've heard so far!

    Get rid of SpyBot, as it is crap.

    Instead, get SpySweeper , it's a whole lot better. It has a registry protector, startup shield, and a top notch adware/spyware removal tool. There's a total of 10 shields protecting you. :thumb: :rolling:

    Thanks, Kitrax.

    Tal,

    Some are from SP I know and that's fine. The rest pop up even if my browser isn't open. They even popup even if I'm offline! I leave for lunch and come back seeing 20 copies of the same popup.

    Ah, you should have said so. That's a whole different matter... I'd just reinstall Windows in such a case... you need a good reason to every now and then anyway, and it'll probably be quicker and definitely 100% effective. After that make sure to install a firewall and the known anti-spyware and anti-adware tools and you should be set. Get a virus scanner too, there are free ones around.

    Hitman pro solved everything for me, after trying adaware, firefox and the rest.
