I have loaded up SCSII for the very 1st time. I usually don't play mods of this type, just NPC mods are minor adjustments to BG2 only. I'm currently in the Temple Ruins, my Party is levels 8-9. I had no problem getting through the Temple, UNTIL I met both the Dragon and the Shade Lord Encounter. HOLY CRAP! I am to low level to take on the Dragon, as I don't have Lower Resistance yet, though that is something I will soon remedy. But the Shade Lord is UNREAL! How do you even hurt him. He used to be rather easy, now hes... WOW!!

    Hints or Ideas please...

    Thanks!

It's been awhile since I played SCSII, but I seem to remember that there was some sort of "trick" to this battle. I just wish I could recall what that trick was. :(

Sword Coast Stratagems II, an AI improvement mod for BG2 without the overpowered/cheesy monster abilities introduced by other such mods such as Tactics and Anvil. Check att gibberlings3 website.

Well, I think the obvious plan is to gather more XP and return. But I noticed that Melf's MM didn't even touch him? Reading the readme to the mod, they changed the spell and it no longer bypasses magical defenses. Ok, I like that change, but now what do I do to hurt the Shade Lord? My 5-member Party below .... I will add either Saerilith, Haldimar or Kivan, not sure yet. If Kivan, Mazzy will become my other Tank, with Full-Plate +2, the Shield of the Lost(for now) and her Dex, she will have a great AC. I will probably give her the Dragon Equipment from the Lord Jierdan's lair for some resistances as well. Definitely need another Tank though, as Mazzy is my Archer extradonaire for now. I have loaded Dungeon-be-Gone and went from the Promenade to the Slums to the Government District(for Jan) to City Gates and directly to the Umar Hills(to eventually get Mazzy as early as possible). I will try the free the De'Arnise Keep for some XP and loot and then buy more mage-breaching spells and return for the Shade Lord.

After some XP gathering, I went bakc for round 2. To no avail. I hav not hurt the Shade Lord beyond "Barely Injured". Does he now require cheese to hurt?

I still don't remember the "trick" exactly, but I think it might involve taking out the other enemies first. (Maybe Patrick? Not sure.)

I "think" you have to take out the Shade Alter 1st, but I have tried it and it didn't seem to have any afect on the Shade Lord. So, I tried taking out Patrick 1st, which is simple enough, but that didn't seem to do anything either. The Shade Lord puts up his portections then starts wrecking havoc on my party, no matter what buffs or protections I put up. Is this a level 13/14 ish encounter now? I am currently levels 9-11, depending on the Characters. I now have....

    Myself - Fig(7)/Mage(11) DC
    Haldimar - F(10)
    Aerie - M(10)/Cle(10)
    Jan - Ill(9)/Thief(10)
    Kivan - Ran(10)
    Saerilith - Pal(9)

Will Keldorn's Dispel effect remove the Shade Lord's protections?

Did you have any luck? I gave up on that component - I think I did it at much higher levels than you but still couldnt do it. Way, way harder than the Shadow Dragon. I cant remember why exactly, I think its because hes so difficult to damage and is a powerful spellcaster.

For me the biggest problem with the shade lord was level drains.

I generally used magic weapons to beat him and it didn't matter if I took out the dark alter or corrupted (shadow) Patrick before or after the shade lord went down.

I believe some magic spells may effect him but that could be things like fireball that will hurt a few party members too.

It can be done I just don't usually do that quest first.
