You're right, what a doofus I am for not adequately divining your level of intoxication before suggesting a chill pill. I guess, after all that wine, this must be the chill version I'm talking to!     Um... Splunge isn't an American last I checked. Maybe it's a North American thing. That said, I'm sure there are many animals we can name that some people would not have heard of.

    That's one thing that never ceases to amaze my about the UK. It seems like you guys have so many more accents than we have in the states, and this is despite the fact that you are geographically very integrated. You wonder how poeple that only live some miles away have totally different accents.

    Hells no. We only have about 4 or 5 different dialects in out entire country. Most of those sounding like inbred hicks are the Appalacians.

    I just had some kiwis now after reading the thread. They tasted nice. Does anybody need me to differentiate which I ate?

    It's a historical thing, their accents evolved over thousands of years. The US is only newly settled in historical terms and the same accents would have been brought westwards by the settlers as was spoken in the east. And travel was much harder back before the US was founded. Never mind pronunciation, in medieval times many words were different in communities just a few miles apart and communication could be difficult. I saw a documentary where they had some Old English professors speaking in each of the dialects and the same sentences were often unrecognisable. Standardisation of the language only really kicked off with the advent of printing and the St James bible in particular.
