Odd New Special Abilities in Multiplayer

Discussion in 'BG2: Throne of Bhaal (Classic)' started by Lord Sarevok, Feb 5, 2002.

    After joining an online multiplayer game, I imported a low level character from SoA to ToB. All of my special abilites were changed. Instead of slow posion I had neutralize posion, instead of horror I had cloak of fear, instead of laroch's minor drain I had Cause Serious Wounds, ect. Anyone else have this happen to them? BTW, I wasn't the host...

    I think it might be because I imported a character into ToB BEFORE having my soul stolen by Irenicus. Odd, cause I've never seen this "upgrade" to special abilites mentioned anywhere.

    Obviously ToB changed your lvl-1 or 2 innate abilites to lvl-4 innate abilities - probably because ToB definitely is a high level campaign ... the original abilities would have been kinda useless there ... who would use CLW at all (healing 1d8 hitpoints) when there are tons of healing potions around that heal 27 or even 40 damage? Poison is very strong in ToB, only having slow poison would have been insufficient there ... the same applies to Larlochs minor drain and create serious wounds ...
    • Cure Light Wounds (cleric lvl-1) ->cure serious wounds (cleric lvl-4)
    • Larloch's minor drain (mage lvl-1) -> cause serious wounds (cleric lvl-4)
    • Slow poison (cleric lvl-2) ->neutralise poison (cleric lvl-4)
    • Horror (mage lvl-1 or 2*) ->cloak of fear (cleric lvl-4)

    (*I play the german version - I don't know which one of the two terror-spells is named spook or horror :D )

    ... and so on. Makes sense to me. It might be interesting to check that for all innate abilities ... :)

    I find that the special abilities are quite unstable and I find my chaotic good characters getting the lawful good specials...

    [IMG] btw - am I right when I guess your char with the strange innate abilities was from BG-1 ?

    No, he was from SoA, true neutral. I imported him strait from Irenicus's dungeon after changing his apperance to a cowled wizard. He was to be my Assassin/Mage's "apprentice" on multiplayer :).

    Guess this only happens if you have more than one generated character, but what's really odd about it is, normally IIRC only the protaganist gets the special abilities...

    Not sure about the apparent ability switch, but I did export one of my own characters from SoA and import them into a multi-player ToB. Although my character wasn't the main one, he still got special abilities. But, when I first created that character in SoA, he was the main character. Hence, the special abilities later on. As to upgrading them, I didn't notice that part - but I probably wouldn't complain too much :)

    The only special ability that is per se restricted to main chars is the slayer change and the abyssal stronghold ability.

    That's why I guessed you may have used a BG-1 character - I tested a number of imported characters from BG-1, BG-2 and newly made ToB chars in a new game in ToB - the only one that had these improved innate abilities was the one from BG-1.
    My archer from BG-2 only had the slayer change left. Not surprisingly, the cahr from BG-1 no longer had the innate abilities when imported as a min char. So the rule seems to be:

    • Main chars generally loose their innate abilities since they are considered to be a result of beeing a bhaalspawn.
    • Player generated NPCs may keep their innate abilities (mind that this isn't Bhaal specific - Minsc's rage ability is neither ranger specific nor a result of him beeing a Bhaalspawn. In BG-1 there were several NPCs with special innate abilities, namely Eldoth and Branwen).
      When you exported your char in BG-1 in Irenicus' dungeon right after game start (to have the innate Bhaal-Spawn/ Main char specific :D abilities implemented in your exported char) he would certainly have all the innate abilities you mentioned.
