This may be a silly question for those of you who have been doing this for years, but how does online gaming work? How do you find other people to play with? Do you have to set aside 7 hours to be online at exactly the same time as the other players? In online worlds like ALFA, what happens when you're away from your computer? Can someone come along and kill your character because you're not there?

You guys seem to love this online multiplayer gaming but I just can't visualise how it all works.

You just go to server page in the game. You can see all of them there, with their modules. Sometimes there's a comment on it so it gives you a basic idea about it. You also see player that are playing it currently as well as maximum player number. This is usefull, since you probably dont want to be playing alone.
Some servers are naturaly more populated than others, but normaly you can find people on some server you wanna play.

Yeah, sure if you're logged into a server and your character is just standing alone somewhere, sure someone can come along and kill you. Area must be full PvP though - player vs. player that is.
Heh, it actualy happened to me once in ALFA (Full PvP everywhere). My char Roshnak (fighter1/barb2) was standing in front of some inn, recovering from a few bottles of vile goblin concoction (myself being AFK - away from keyboard), when a sorcerer came by and apparently decided i'm an easy pray. He summoned a burning hell-hound and drew out his own crossbow. After taking a few wounds Roshnak woke up (i came back to comp.), drew his huge two-handed sword and sliced the dog in half in one mighty blow. He staggered over to the frightened sorcerer and cut his head off. He took all his gold and crossbow, and casually strode back into the tavern :D
    Talk about coolness
