I've played BG1 so many times, I've even come up with an order to do most of the quests in the game that I rarely deviate from. I always do it in the following order:

    1. Get party together as completely as is reasonably possible. In other words, I don't complete any quests without getting the NPCs I want, unless I'm planning on taking a PC that is unavailable until a later chapter, which really only eliminates about 1/3 of all NPCs - and why they put so many NPCs in locations that can't be accessed before Chapter 4 never ceases to amaze me.

    2. Do all the Beregost related quests.

    3. Go west and complete the gnoll stronghold, and get to Brage to take you back to Nashkel.

    4. Kill Bassilus and do the chicken quest.

    5. Do the temple area for the huge XPs available there.

    6. Do the mines.

    7. Do the lighthouse area for the huge XPs and the Constitution book.

    8. Proceed through rest of chapters normally.

So basically, there's a ton of areas that I NEVER do simply because the XPs in those areas aren't worth the time. If I kill Drizzit, I usually put that off until Chapter 5, when I can get my hands on some wands of monster summoning.

So who else has set strategies and order of doing quests.

Aldeth the Foppish Idiot when I played as my Ranger I was able to pick up all my group before any one was level 2 with the exception of Viconcia.

Here is the group I usually travel with:
Imoen - pick right up after the prologue.
Viconcia - Save her from the FFS
Jeheria - FAI right after I pick up Viconcia.
Minsc - Pick him up in Naskel
Edwin - Pick him up in Naskel

I than do the Knoll Stronghold quest to rescue and kill the witch.

After completing that quest I clear all areas out south of FAI. After doing that I go North and clear all areas out around FAI. Than if I feel my characters are strong enough I will clear out DT and than I will complete the game from there chapter by chapter until i get out of Candlekeep. At that time I finish all the quest in Ulderth Beard and than I finish the game. I do it this way to level up my characters for the later chapters and to provide some fairly decent magical items. Not only that but I find it a challenge facing Sirines at level 2/3.

The generic run-through order for me:
    1. Get Imoen.
    2. FAI for Khalid and Jaheria
    3. Go north of FAI for Ajantis
    4. Beregost; talk to Firebead, Marl and Mirianne.
    5. Nashkel for Minsc or High Hedge for Kivan
    6. Carnival for Branwen
    7. Gnoll stronghold for Dynaheir
    8. Nashkel mines
    9. Misc. quests around Nashkel
    10. Beregost quests, including sirines
    11. Bandit Camp
    12. Anything else so I can put off Cloakwood for as long as possible. :)
    13. Cloakwood
    14. Ulgoth's for shopping
    15. Baldur's Gate
    16. Candlekeep again
    17. Finish it off

It changes depending on what class my PC is. If I'm a thief type, Imoen stays with Monty and Xzar. Khalid will die if I'd rather have both Kivan and Minsc.

Naturally party composition comes first, but otherwise:

    1. Kill 'belt' ogre and head to FAI for reward.
    2. Down to Beregost and all nearby areas, as shown here -

    X B X

    3. Nashkel
    4. The southwest region, starting from the mine area and working my way back up to Candlekeep.
    5. Nashkel mines
    6. Southeast region, starting where you come out of the mines and working my way up to the forests east of FAI. Only the top levels of Durlag's Tower.
    7. Bandit camp
    8. Cloakwood
    9. Areas north of FAI
    10. Baldur's Gate
(10-1/2. Sometimes I do Ulgoth's Beard here, but otherwise I save it for later.)
    11. Iron Throne and Candlekeep Revisited
(11-1/2. If I haven't done UB yet, I do it here.)
    12. Durlag's Tower, the lower levels
    13. Head back to BG and finish the game.

This is exatlly why i don't play this game anylonger. I can predict everything on any map when i enter it, i know what weapons, items, npc, monsters, quests etc are on each map.

This completelly ruin the fun for me. So i will probablly be unable to paly this game again until i have finally forgotten things or until someone make a "random BG1" mod.

    @raptor:
I don't think it's completely randomized, but the Fields of the Dead mod does move things around. Give it a try if you haven't already.

My Gnoll Stronghold Cinematic is busted so I can't got there, so my order is usually:

    1) Get Imoen
    2) Use Xzar and Montaron to help me kill the ogre (make sure they die trying)
    3) Get Khalid and Jaheira
    4) Go to Beregost an do the quests
    5) Do nearly all random areas near Beregost and Nashkell aside from firewine ruins and gullykin (kobolds annoy me) and Gnoll Stronghold and the leftmost area with the sirines.
    6) Do the Mines and then firewine and gullykin and work my way up and proceed according to the story.

Aldeth, I've played this game sooOoOo many times as well, but the thing is, everytime I play, I play as something different. Different class, different race, different party, different strategies. So basically everything I do is random as to keep it more fun!

However, i always love playin as part rogue, being evil and just ruling tha world. And when i do that, I play it like this:

    *Exit Candlekeep with Immy
*Kill the Ogre and gank his belt
*Head to Friendly Arm Inn and get Khalid and Jaheria
    *Beregost and get Kaigin
    *Nashkel to pick up Edwin
*Go get Viccy from up in the Northeast
    *Mines and surrounding area
*Then pretty much take out EVERY area possible one by one and kill everything possible in accordance with being as evil as i can! :D

    Been a while now but:
    *Pick up Imoen
*Head South, pick up Kivan from High Hedge
*Continue South, grab Branwen and Minsc
*Head across bottom of map at a run to grab Dynahier from the Gnoll Stronghold
*Run through Chapter quests while doing as little side quests as possible.
*Pick up Coran (And dump Imoen) from the woods, kill a Wyvern, head back into town for reward.

Why? It's possible to get Coran at a fairly low level so you have more say on how his stats go.

*Clear out the lighthouse with a lone archer for the easy xp's
*Systematically work down the coast and then from the south upwards, clearing out all screens and quests. I tend to do as much as I can before heading into Baldurs Gate.
