    Anyone seen the movie? It's based on the real story of a certain doctor who refused to be detached from patients and maintain professional distance, jumping into such extremes as playing a clown in front of a group of children. One of the notable facts is that he went to a medical university after leaving a psychward against the doctor's recommendation in order to achieve inner peace by helping others. There is a brief humorous introduction devoted to this and then the action takes place over the course of his studies. There is a lot of swings from excessive happiness (a term used in the movie) to utmost sadness, so don't expect an easy mellow movie if you're going to watch this one.

    [IMG] It was on TV a couple of months ago, and I don't regret staying in and watching it. Robin Williams is at his best (the scene with the squirrelphobic guy is one of my favourites), and the twists of the movie are a real treat.

    It's virtually a biography about Dr. Adams: he really exists, that IS his name and the hostel - the Gesundheit Institute - is still going strong (in spirit and influence, if not literal presence).

    A wonderful portrayal by Robin Williams. He has this...naive innocent reaction when someone tells him that he must keep his emotional distance. Really hammers the point through.

    And FWIW - Patch committed himself to the asylum, so he was free to leave at any time - he was there for help and therapy of his own violition.

    But I love the exchange he has with 'his psychatrist':
    {and I'm paraphrasing - it's been a while}

    Patch(eagerly): I know what I want to do; I want to help people.

    Doctor(good-naturedly) : But that's my job.

    Patch: But you stink at it.

    :lol:

    I also recommend this movie highly - you're right in that it's not all roses and rainbows - be prepared for dark parts.

    Saw it when it first came out in the US; I'm a big Robin Williams fan. I wasn't really expecting such a deep and bittersweet movie, and it really touched me. Don't get me wrong though, there was more than enough funny to go around.

    I am not a Robin Williams fan, but the best thing about the movie is that is based on a real person. Simply wonderful :)

    Nice movie. It has a certain moral that I liked. Movies without anything that keeps you thinking are rather dull. I liked Robin's movie "Jack" as well and "Goodmorning Vietnam".

    Yeah, it's a great movie and always worth watching when it comes on telly. It's actually making me smile whilst I think about it :)
