[IMG] I have a Compaq Presario with WinXP and an old PC with Win98SE and I wanted to know if I can connect them with the USB port they have. Is just that I am tired of transferring files with my Zen Mico as 'data carrier' from one computer to another.
If so, do I need another program? Like Norton Commander I used for serial connections.

It is possible to connect them, but I don't know exactly how. It's not the USB port, though.

It would be best if you had XP on both.

    network them together
(networks between 2 computers don't need a hub if their close. WinXP network setup wizard (control panel) allows you to setup networks between different versions of windows with minimum effort

If you don't have a network card on the older one, there is a (rather slow) alternative, though I've not used it in a long time and so can't immediately help you with the details. It is to connect them by the parallel ports. The you can put one comp as a slave for the other. Inside windows, it would just look as if you had added a HD.

[IMG] Serial and parallel connections are painfully slow, especially if you need to transfer large files. Connecting both using the ethernet cards and a crossover cable would be a more suitable option.

If the older PC doesn't have an Ethernet port, you can buy a decent 10/100Mbit ethernet card for less than €30 in any computer shop, and a crossover cable costs roughly €10.

In order to make them 'see each other' the easiest is to connect both PCs together, disable the firewalls, and let the network cards obtain an Automatic Private IP address, which normally starts with 169.254.x.x. Then, ensure that the PC and the laptop are in the same Workgroup, and share a drive or a folder in the PC and in the laptop, and see if you can see them from the respective Network Neighbourhood.

Note that if you are using a firewall in any of the two computers, you will need to either disable it when connecting the two PCs together, or add the other computer's IP address to the respective firewall's "permitted" computers list. Otherwise, they will not be able to see each other in the LAN.
