[IMG] I am doing planar sphere quest and I just
need to insert the demon heart in the core.
A few moments after I enter the room
I am surrounded by golems coming out of
the air: 2 iron golems 4 stone golems
    and 4 clay golems.
I know there are supposed to be some
but...so MANY? With their haste and my slow
it only takes a round for them to kill
    all my party members.
I have tried all manner of positions
but they always get me trapped so I can't
    move anywhere.
Also one of the iron golems blocks for
4 of the others it blocks so I can't
get my wounded characthers out of the way
when the other 4 goes Minsc!!!
    Help!

[IMG] I feel your pain. That occurance annoyed me immensely as well.
I mean, OK, I could probably handle them all in an open space but there's so little room down there that only one character at a time can actually battle the golems and in a few seconds you get surrounded by them from back and front. Really nasty, and it takes quite a high level party to handle them.
Another godawful detail: sure, you can run out of there once you spot them... But the fight won't be marked as finished in the game so you won't be able to save the game, or rest... Until you go back and are slaughtered.

Here's a solution to this that worked for me. (Sorry, but you'll need a savegame before you have used the heart on the core).

1.) Have all your characters except one near the exit of the core level.
2.) Use that one character to get the ring from the part of the core that is trapped. You can skip this, it's your choice.
3.) Run like hell from the second you pick up the ring directly to the core to where you will insert the heart into. You need to have it on you to do this probably.
4.) Insert the heart, see the sequence played out etc. and RUN LIKE HELL to where your party is.
5.) Select your whole party and choose the exit they're standing in front of and get the hell out before golems appear.

Mission accomplished. Now the golems will not have appeared yet and you'll be free to return to them at any point in the game. Just remember to save the game before you enter that part again, because after your first getaway you won't get another. They'll appear instantaneously then.

[IMG] Oh and Divine, you don't have to start a new paragraph each time you come to the border of the box where you write your text in. Just continue writing and it'll skip to the next line itself and your posts won't look so silly then. ;)

. Definitive Golem Killing Guide (sorta)

I'd read that spells just don't work on golems, but I tried 'em all. Well, level 1-6 any ways. I'd also read that lightning or that polymorphing into a jelly would work, but not for me. A few spells DID work, but only one stood out. Melf's Meteors put a serious long range hurtin' on 'em, without reducing their magic resistance. (ok, so I didn't try the jelly thing. I normally don't use my mages as front-liners.)
I tried fire, ice, piercing, +1, +2 arrows, etc.
A bunch of bolts, lightning, biting, +2, etc.

So here goes. Stats are for pumped up mages and fighters, either magically (draw on holy might, etc.) or uhh.. magically (gauntlets, etc). Strength anywhere from 21 to 18.

    • Iron Golem
Melf's Meteors 4-12 points per hit, 3-4 hits per round, 44-70 points per spell. Fast and deadly.
normally +3, with +3 fire damage. Got no fire damage, but up to 5 shots per round. you get one meteor per level. (Aerie finally paid her own way)
After using 3 Lower Resistence spells (-21% per spell), Magic Missile worked, as did Enfeeble. Magic Missile 4-20 points per spell
      None others. None.

+3 weapons minimum, long swords (blade of roses), hammer (giant killer), flail (of ages), spears.
Guess spears kind pick away at 'em.
      +2 sling using +1 Sunstone 10-12 pts/hit,(best bullet in the game, 1d4+2, +2fire, +1thaco)
      no arrows, no bolts
He throws a ton of poison clouds, so have a bunch of clear air spells and protection from poisons on hand.

    • Stone Golem
      Melf's did 3-6 points per hit, ~45 points per spell, m.missile 4-14 pts/spell
+2 blunt weapons (mace, flail, hammer, club, morning star), spears.
      +2 sling using +3 bullets 14-16pts/hit, +1 Sunstone 15+2-17+2 pts/hit,(best bullet in the game, 1d4+2, +2fire, +1thaco)
      no arrows, no bolts

    • Clay Golem
Melf's only did 2pts per hit, ~20 per spell, but after the others, he's just a breeze.
+2 blunt weapons only, my monk (lvl.12) got a 46 point fist hit.
no arrows, no bolts, sunstone on a +2 sling did 1 pt

I'm sure Sling of Everhard would work too.
I've heard that Azuredge and the Short Bow of Geisen do 1-3 pts per hit, but I didn't have 'em at this point.
A high level mage using Protect from Magical Weapons could do it too, just with a lot of spells (they don't last long), and some patience.

As for the Adamantium, your on your own, but this ought to give you some direction.

As for strategy, limit the number of baddies that can get at you at any one time. Cycle fighters in and
out, healing them, and sending 'em back to the front. Other than that, your normal defensive spells.
Haste, Chant, Armors, Clean Air, Protect from poisons, etc.

Ring(s) of the Ram will work always (15-30 points on average).
Ring of Earth Elemental Control works sometimes too. Rarely, but sometimes. If it does, grab the biggest lump of whatever and pound away on the others.

Or specifically, just pull everyone over to the right intersection of you come in from the hot side, and the left if you came in from the cold side.... or is it vice-versa?..
anyways, they ought to pop in outta nowhere pretty close to at the same time with out you ever being in their range.. Pick off the goons in the back before taking out the Iron, using one of those ranged attacks described above, then slap him down too.

I don't know why no one said it yet, but conjured bears are great golem killers :)

If you survived Tolgerias... what's the problem?
I had to stop in Tolgerias since I had 4/6 party members left after that fight and the next room was full of monsters and I had like 0 spells anymore with my sorcerer.

I play novice. Damn hard game or maybe I shouldn't have 6 members in party so I would get more exp. Lvl 9-10 chars can't do anything.

I didn't have that multiple golem problem. If I remember correctly, walking around to the extreme parts of the map triggered some individual golems, so I never had to meet the whole family in toto.

I didn't have problems with golems, I killed them all before I inserted the heart one at a time and didn't encounter any iron golems.

[IMG] Maybe it depends on the game difficulty. Now I KNOW that they appear there in my game like 20 seconds after you insert the heart in.
2 iron ones, and 6 clay ones, if I remember right. Each 1+3 group spawning in the middle intersection and at the west part of the core.

Now that I did the Planar Sphere quest twice (the second stronghold bug was still there, oh well) I can tell u about those nasty golems.
I was doing the quest at the same level both times, so your level doesn't affect their appearance. If u venture down to the power core before u went to explore the demonic valley, there will be no Iron golems, but just small groups of stone/clay golems, and a single clay golem guarding the container on the right. After u do return with the demon heart the room will be still empty and nothing spectacular happens on inserting it. This is how it went the first time for me :)

The second time knowing I will need that demon heart I did go outside first, and was quite surprised to see the Iron Golem with those cowardly stone and clay golems behind them. (My kensai/mage hasted can kill the Stone golems by herself, but many of them together is nasty even for her).
Make sure u work in the power core from fire room and don't rush anywhere. The golems will just stay there while Iron Golem is alive. There will be two groups of golems there. One of them is right in front of the core (the one that u see if u walk in from the fire shpere), another group is to the left and is entirely optional unless u incidentally walk up to them, inserting the heart didn't trigger than for me... There's still that single clay golem guarding the loot to the right.
My tactic to slay golems is just haste, potions of strength for tougher ones like ademantile?, and lots of brutal force :) And don't forget to use blunt weapons with clay golems, the best tip in the manual :)
