    You might think, writing a letter won't help. But letters from all Amnesty groups in the world are a lot of letters. ;)

    [​IMG] That site's outdated. The nigerian president pardoned everyone sentenced to stoning on the 43th anniversary of Nigeria's independence... I read it in the newspaper today.

    Tal, I believe that the sentence at the moment still stands. Either the newspaper was incorrect or there is a chance that perhaps the article was misread. Safiya Hussaini did have her sentence overturned since she was sentenced before the law went into effect. I'm not saying you are wrong, but the articles I read posted 1 hour ago indicate the sentence still stood. That was from a search on google I can't seem to link, but the world beauty paegeant ladies are talking boycott as of a few hours ago.

    All of those sites are simply copying each other, repeating the same things over and over again. So I wouldn't be surprised if the actual pardoning would take them some time to notice.

    Tal, perhaps so, but I hope noone who might consider taking the time to sign the petition would choose not to because there may be a pardon forthcoming. The petitions would exert political pressure on foreign governments (read U.S., Europe, Japan, etc.) to condemn the use of stoning and thereby perhaps prevent such cases from occurring in the future.

    And just in case there was a mistake in that paper, it couldn't hurt. FWIW, the New York Times reported on it today and indicated it was still a go, I'll cross my fingers though.

    LAGOS - Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo gave assurances that the country's higher appeal courts would quash the death-by-stoning sentences for adultery passed by Islamic courts.

    Obasanjo said in a radio and television broadcast to mark Nigeria's 42nd independence anniversary that a 31-year-old mother, Amina Lawal Kurami, and a couple condemned to death by Muslim courts can launch appeals at the Supreme Court where they will be guaranteed justice.
