Here is an interesting game to play once or twice.

    http://www.redistrictinggame.org/

I recommend thinking it over if you live in Illinois, California, Texas, or Florida.

Maybe a few other states too.

Add a link to a similar political game turned lesson if you find one.

Gerrymandering is yet another thing that Massachusetts owes an apology to the rest of the country for. The way my Congressional district is drawn is criminal.

How so? In 2001 - the last time it was redistricted, the Republicans were in charge. Since redistricting occurs at a federal level, are you suggesting the Republicans drew the lines in a way that was unfavorable to them?!?!

Granted, MA is a pretty blue state, so there isn't really much of a way that you could district them to be really favorable to your party. As for odd shapes and sizes of districts - that always happens. They usually make some effort to make the populations within each district very close.

A similar thing happens in my district, as the small town of 30,000 that I live in actually has people in two different districts. Depending on what part of town you live in, your Congressman is either Dutch Ruppersberger or John Sarbanes.

No, what I'm saying is that it meanders all over the place (and through two counties).

I also think you may be wrong as I believe it is the state legislatures that create the districts so I don't believe the GOP has had that power in Massachusetts ever.

Yes, it is states that control their redistricting, though different states have different ways of doing it.

Gerrymandering is a ridiculous ploy, and it's a travesty that it can happen at all, but it is an unfortunate political reality these days.
