[IMG] There is a long-running debate on gun ownership and control and I was interested in learning more in simple terms. There 7 questions in total, 4 about owning guns and then a subsequent question about which continent for 3 of them.
Definition of a gun for this purposes is a pistol (automatic or revolver), rifle or shotgun that can be used to kill.
Please answer honestly I know I have....

When I lived in Africa I did a lot of travelling and was advised to carry guns as a protection, on two separate occasions I legally shot burglars on my land carrying away my property. The first one was a white european, the second was an indigenous african.

Question 5 is about whether you have fired a gun for a purpose other than target practice not necessarily self-defence, it could be hunting or as a warning to a wild animal etc.

Question 7 people who own guns please vote yes.

    Thanks

No, no, no and no. North American, no guns, don't want 'em, don't need 'em, might go to a gun range one day just to see what the fuss is all about.

Pretty much exactly the same as dmc except for the country. Don't own one, never have, never plan to. Have been around someone using a rifle to shoot rabbits once or twice, and that's about it.

The funny thing is, I might need training in their use as part of my job in the months ahead. I'll cross that bridge if and when I come to it, but I still have no plans to privately own a registered firearm. I don't need them, and I don't want them.

I have owed guns, rifles & shotguns. Never a hand gun. I have used a rifle for hunting. I grew up in a household that had rifles & shotguns and was taught at an early age their use and care and to never ever under any circumstances to point them at anyone or thing we did not mean to shot. That included my cap pistol and BB gun. Made it hard to play cowboys and Indians with anything but imaginary foes.

I am in favor of strict gun control and fail to see the neccesity of high powered guns for anyone outside of the Service or law-inforcement.

IMO hand guns are for the sole purpose of killing people and if someone wants to collect them fine but make sure they have been fixed so that they cannot be fired. Households with children should not have guns unless they're locked up tighter than a Vestal Virgin.

A gun's a gun. If it can fire metal bullets, I'd say it counts. ;)

Well, as I hinted, I do have a BB gun that I played with when I was younger. But a real gun? No way; never.

I would like to get my hands on a vintage bow, though.

I had a hand gun once, when I got my first apartment, as just thought I "needed" it for protection. I never fired it, and after it collected dust for a couple of years, I gave it away. As for the protection, I got a dog instead....

most gun ranges allow anyone over the age of 7 as long as they are accompanied by an adult/parent.
boyscouts , girlscouts and 4h all have merit badges for shooting AFAIK.

i can remember having to bring shotguns to highschool for hunter safety training because they didn't have enough for the boys and girls classes at the same time. god , can you imagine that now???

I'm with Nakia on this one:

I grew up in the military, as well as in an area where hunting is about as widespread as breathing.

When I was a kid, we had a handgun in the house (my father's, which he had to keep on orders from Uncle Sam), and all of my uncles owned rifles and shotguns (never anything automatic or semi-automatic - one actually prefers bowhunting over rifles). I also owned two BB guns (pistols) as a teenager. (And the rule there was, if it's not a can or other approved target, don't shoot at it. There were some VERY lucky squirrels in my neigborhood, I tell you!) I have used a rifle for hunting (deer - for food, not sport), and have spent time at shooting ranges with everything from six-shooters and handguns to shotguns and M-16s (had a friend who worked at the base's firing range).

I was taught (like Nakia, although it probably wasn't quite so long ago! :D ) at an early age their use, their care, and more importantly the consequences of their misuse and lack of care. All guns in the house (including my BB guns) were kept in a gunsafe, and Dad had the ONLY key. After he retired, he got rid of his handgun promptly (and I grew out of my BBs, giving them to a younger cousin).

I too am in favor of strict gun control. Until deer and quail carry AK-47s, the only people who need autos and semiautos are in law enforcement and the Military. I don't own a gun now, and don't plan to buy one in the forseeable future.

That's all I have to say about that.

I have a .22LR rifle and a calibre 12 shotgun, both used for fun and hunting. You don't need to protect yourself in Norway, the society does that for you.

No no no and no! Why would I ever want to use a gun anyway? I'm in North America too.
