[IMG] Just wondering what is most important to most people when they play a game; would you rather have a game with really good graphics and a simple story, really good story and old school graphics, or excellent gameplay and average story and graphics.

Good story. Most of all a decent level of interactivity in which your choices actually matter. With that I can even stand no graphics at all. However, when the graphics is and is screwed I hate the game - unlike the sound that may be turned off unless, heaven forbid, it comes from PC speaker.

A good plot and a good atmosphere affects all for me!
    I don't give a heck to graphics.

I have to say all three, because if a game lacks one of them the others are usually obselete. Graphics aren't nescesary, but they make a game MUCH more fun to play. Story isn't as important as gameplay aswell, because who cares about the story if you can't play it?

Does pornography falls under graphic? Then graphic it is.

Where is the atmosphere where all you see either crappy graphic or lines of words? Graphic together with sound will greatly enhance the atmosphere.

I agree with teekc, though I don't make as big a deal about the graphics as I do plot and gameplay quality, good sound and graphics are definitely important to the atmosphere.

I remember I was in awe of some of the visuals in recent games like Dungeon Siege, it definitely added to my enjoyment, even if some of them were just cheap thrills.

As for the poll, I voted gameplay, secondly would be plot and graphics close behind.

I can go just about any way. But one of those qualities must stand out, beyond anything else, for me to like the game.

Jedi Knight 2 had outstanding gameplay. I wouldn't really call the story awesome. And the graphics were just pretty normal Quake3 engine stuff.

Myst was super pretty. And had incredible sound. I dunno if the sound should fit under story (atmosphere) or not, but it rocked on all accounts.

Fallout1 and Star Control2 both had awesome stories. The graphics were good enough to tell the story, and the gameplay was too.

I don't know where Icewind stands out more. But it definately has a mixture of everything in it. I might go with "atmosphere" if I had to pick the one trait; which is almost halfway between story and graphics/sound.

To be perfectly honest, I think cheats also factor in there for me, as well. There have been games where I just absolutely do not have time to play Mickey Mouse games with the controls, or the combat system is far too complex for me to sit down and spend 10 hours just learning all the differences and saving/reloading to get past one part.

Story and gameplay come first, they both have to be good. This way there will be no frustrations and you have a good goal to aim for. Graphics don't matter to me, hell I still play fallout at least twice a year.

But for me most important is the most vague aspect of the game: my personal feeling.

A game can have a great story and great gameplay and great graphics but if I don't have 'that' feeling I'm not going to play it.

Example Icewind Dale I played almost a dozen times now but I can't get into IWDII for some odd reason, the feel isn't there.

teekc - Were there these nifty UT-2003 graphics in the time of Eye of the Beholder? No but i remember playing it 24/7.The are other things that affect the game such as plot, navigation in menus ,playability and a cool protagonist.

Gameplay first, story second, graphics a distant third.

NWN might have had wonderful state of the art graphics but it was dull as anything to play.

On the other hand, the graphics in BG 1 & 2 weren't in the same league, but gameplay was ten times better.

[IMG] Gameplay and Story equally, though Graphics as well take a small portion. but not important, take Simon the Sorcere for example, you could see what people where doing and everything and the puzzles and tricks were good though some things got missed, like the rock you have to pick up looks like an extra bit to a rock in the scenary

    Examples:

    Good graphics: Morrowind.
    Great story: BaldurĀ“s Gate.
    Nice gameplay: Final Fantasy.

Sure, Morrowind has good looking graphics and the gameplay is nice too, but story that should entice to play the game through is missing.

Final Fantasy? Would be an even pick between it and BG, but then I remembered FF VIII and often senseless random battles (enemies popping out of nowhere). So pick is BaldurĀ“s Gate (= great story).

Khelben - Yes, i also did play pong 24/7 which has ...erm... nothing. But as we are climbing the tech tree, i do expect pong to get more sophisticated after one another. Human senses evlove also. At the begining of 1900 I. Stravinsky's Rite of Spring set of an riot. But now as we are listening to music 100 times more disturbing, do you feel motivated setting of an riot listening to M. Manson? There were tons of classic black and white scary movies, but do anyone of them scares you better than Friday the 13th?

Graphics mean next to nothing to me in terms of what the character looks like and all that, but I do enjoy a good background. The story and environment, character interaction, etc... are the most deciding factors for me when I read reviews and such on games that I may purchase.

Wow! It seems that not 1 person out of 25 gives a... about graphics. I appreciate good graphics, but they are not essential to a crpg. Ironically, one of the main reasons that I purchased Unreal Tournament was the amazing graphics.

I realy don't care that much about graphics, if it has a good storyline and good character development eg:FFVII, then I will play it and most likely like it.

I'd have to with gameplay, though I lean heavily towards story. A game could have the best story in the world, but if playing through that story is like pulling teeth, I won't play no matter how cool it is. Graphics are 3rd, because I prefer the original Baldur's Gate, for example, to most games that are out today using state of the art graphics. Both the gameplay and story IMO are extremely well done, and that's what truly makes the game. There are plenty of games out there with amazing graphics who reside sadly in bargain bins for this very reason.
