[IMG] If I have a fighter and I put **** into long sword then dual clas to a thief, and before I regain my fighter ailities, put another * into long sword, when I regain my fighter abilities, will I have ***** in long sword? Also, what would happen if i did the same stuff, only I put ***** into long sword as a fighter?
    Thanksfor the help.

No, you would not then have ***** in longswords. The proficiencies gained as a theif will not add to the ones gained as a fighter until you surpass the fighter level. Then only the proficiency slots assigned from that point on will be added to the fighter total.

Proficiencies between your two classes do not add, they merge. If your two classes have proficiencies in common (longswords in your example) the larger of the two will be used when you regain your first class' abilities.

What a minute Blackthorne, are you saying that If I did **** as a fighter and * as a thief I would have ***** or ****? Baldak Oakfist seems to say they would merge, to get *****, when I get my fighter sklls back. Please explain. Thanks for the help!

I did not say that they would be combined. What I said is that once your second class level gets higher than that of the first, any slots allocated to the proficiency in question after that point would be added to the higher of the two. They do not get combined ever. It would be best to choose other proficiencies until you are higher than the first class.

It works like that, an example:

-You create a fighter and give him **** high mastery in longswords for example.
-Then you dual your char to a thief. Then, as a thief you give another * to longswords after changing class.
-Theses five proficiency slots will *not* be added. The higher fighter proficiency will override the thiefes lonely * .

    On the other hand:
-When you wait until you are one level higher than in the fighter class, and then put another * in longswords - then they will add to grandmastery. Adding the proficiency slots for both classes only works when you have regained the abilities of both classes.

So Baldak's tip is right, don't waste your slots - place them in different weapons than in the fighter's ones.

[IMG] Ok so say I wanted to do the infamous DC Ranger/Cleric (someday). So what would be the most strategic way of distributing proficiency points?

You would really have to give more information, like what proficiencies you'd want to achieve and at what level you dual.

But lets say you want proficiencies in flails and hammers. Then when you start your Ranger, take proficiencies in Hammers (for Crom Faeyr later on of course :) ). Then when you dual (most people dual right away or maybe after one or two more levels) take proficienceis in flails for your Cleric (for the Flail of Ages of course :) )

Then when you surpass your Ranger level in your Cleric level, you'll have both flails and hammers and you can dual wield Crom Faeyr and the Flail of Ages... :)

Hmmm interesting. I'm thinking you said to give points to hammers first then flails because I would be using hammers while I was a ranger (a short amount of time at the beginning of the game) and then be able to use flails (not long after the beginning but for awhile until I surpass my ranger level and conviently around the time I get the Flail of Ages.) Whew this dual class stuff takes thought compared to multi-class. Oh yeah should I throw in a proficiency for slings (for those times when range is best?) What would be the best time to do that and how many slots? Thanks.

Thanks for the help guys! I understand now!

Big B, I would put slots into Crom Feayr firstjust because you get to put ** into it as a ranger instead of just * into it as a cleric. Here's a thought, if you put 2 into war hammer as a ranger, then when you get ranger abilities back (from the dual), you could try to put another into war hammer. Not sure if it would work, I'm sure someone can explain. Basically, If you can't get more than ** for a ranger//cleric, put 1 into each weapon you want to use as a ranger, (and pump up two weapon style to ***) then as a cleric (after you are one level higher than the ranger) put another * into every weapon you want to use.

Okay, time to chime in with my lame DC questions . . . (thanks for your patience)

I'm breaking out of my paladin rut by playing a Kensi dc Cleric :p

**** in Katana & ** In dual weild as Kensi
    * in Hammer, Flail & Mace & Single Weapon Style as Cleric

    Here is my concern:

Right now my Kensi is still Inactive. However, through my whole "Cleric only" phase I have not been able to wear armor or bracers, and cannot use a sling.

Therefore, I am assuming that my Kensi limitations over-ride the Cleric's ability to wear armor (I was assuming that I could wear armor at least until my Kensi was reactivated).

Does this mean that my Cleric's inablity to use Edged weapons will make me unable to weild a Katana?

If so, then I've wasted a TON of proficiencies an can see no way to fix this (other than the nasty ol' SK :( ).

You are correct that the Cleric restriction on weapons will not allow you to use any edged weapons. Sorry for the bad news!!

[IMG] Well spank my butt and call me Drizzit! That makes me mad!!!

Why can a person DC from Fighter to Mage and still use all their katanas, crossbows halberds & such!

Is this yet another conspiracy to oppress people of Faith?

Um, because they've used experience others use for levelling just to be able to use weapons instead of the high-level spells?

And no, kensai clerics indeed cannot use edged weapons or armor, heh hehe heh. I guess all the munchkins will be overjoyed when 3rd edition games comes out, allowing more freely made characters.

"Hey there wizard, you could at least swing this sword even if you probably wouldn't hit anything anyway."
"But I can't even hold it in my hand, look!"

The Cleric's weapons restriction is different than that of a Mage's weapons restriction when dealing with dual-classed characters. A mage is not prohibited from using weapons other than dagger/dart/sling/staff, they are prohibited from learning how to use them. Cleric's are prohibited from using edged weapons. This may seem like a minor difference but it makes all the difference in the world. This would make the Kensai/Cleric a pretty useless character class in my opinion.

Go with a fighter or a berserker dual to a cleric. Use the Crom Feayr! Can dual wield if you want, or you can go with a ranger dual to cleric.
Though this isn't along the lines of what you were thinking, you could try a multi class cleric mage; a nice backup mage, can be a backup cleric or can be the only cleric.
Alternitavly, you could dual a mage (conjurer in my opinion) to a cleric as soon as the mage gets lvl 4 spells. Clerics have a really good AC right? Now picture that awesome AC with mirror image and stoneskin. If you want your guy to stay back, he/she can use slings or darts, and, most importantly, magic missle, flame arrow, and fireball. Because clerics don't get very good offensive spells, even low level magic spells like those are a great help!

Mathetais: Make a new char instead. The ranger/cleric dualweilding Crom and the Flail of Ages sounds cool. Go with that instead. (never saw the use for kensai anyway)
