For those of you unfamiliar with Canadian politics, the NDP are the left-leaning socialist party in Canada, and usually a distant third behind the Tories and the Liberals in federal politics.

In some ways, Layton was everything the NDP could hope for in a party leader. Always had that certain public charisma, which by the way was still never enough to compensate for, in the eyes of many, an unreasonably expensive policy platform.

I didn’t really like Layton (I thought he was a windbag, even for a politician). But I have to give him credit for the NDP’s strong showing in the last election, getting the party official opposition status.

I’m not really surprised by this, given how he looked at the press conference where he announced he was stepping aside “temporarily”. Still, it’s not something I’d wish upon anyone.

He was a good man who cared about Canada. It is sad and his family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Although I'm not an NDP voter, I couldn't help but admire the man. I agree with Splunge though, he didn't look good at all at his last press conference. He looked like a tanned skeleton. I had hoped he would get better...

At least, he went out a winner. And did you guys read his letter to canadians? A classy guy to the end. Rest in peace, Jack.
