Hi, I have a question about how to designate storage volumes on my new comp.

I do have two Seagate ST3250310NS 250GB Barracuda ES.2, 24/7. It is so that when I go for RAID 0 I have to allocate the full volume? Setting them in RAID 0 will give me a very fast computer, but, as I understand it, leave me with a vast 500 or so GB volume without partitions.

That would mean I'll have to be extra careful not to lose track of my data and place my files carefully. Despite all the speed, I don't really like the idea.

There is no way that I could only designate 50GB of each HDD to the RAID and leave the remaining volume as a normal partition?

    Any suggestions, experiences, insights?

I may be wrong, but from what I read above I think you are confusing a RAID volume and a partition.

Once you have created a RAID volume, you can partition the volume in any way you want, just like you can partition a single hard drive normally.

If you are using the Intel Matrix Storage Manager, you can even create two independent RAID volumes from your array of drives.

You see, I never made a RAID, and I never got a clear answer to my question from friends either. I thought when I RAID those two HDD I would end up having one volume, one drive that I could not separate into partitions.

Just to see if I understood you right:
A RAID 0 of two HDD results in one simulated volume that uses striping for better speed, but that resulting volume can still be separated into different partitions? That would mean there is no problem for me, except confusion? :D

The Intel Matrix Storage Manager is a very nice tool. When I was playing around with my RAID setups, I used the IMSM to do everything I needed.

At one point I had 2 partitions on a 4HDD RAID 0 array. However, that's not the ideal situation because of any of the 4 HDDs fails; I would have lost all data on both partitions.

For the past several months, I've been using 2 300GB HDDs in a RAID 0 array, 1 300GB HDD as a dedicated backup drive (SyncBack is a great tool for that BTW), and the other 300GB HDD is sitting quietly - disconnected - waiting for one of my volumes to run out of space. :rolling:
