Red background with items

    I realise that this is probably a 2 word answer, but what does the red background to inventory/stores items mean?
    Are they magic? Is an item magic by nature or can
    e.g. a normal longsword be converted into a magic sword?
    Are they Exotic? How does a character obtain the Exotic feat (if that is the correct term)

    It should be obvious that I am an ABSOLUTE beginner

    David, the red background means that you can't use them (you have to be a special class or a certain level).

    Blue background means that it is a magic items that needs to be identified.

    The exotic weapons feat is a ....feat :)
    just select it either from the start or when you get new feats
