Rhino Protected So Well It Died

    Another one for the irony department: While treating a rhino in South Africa to protect it against poachers, the rhino died. Great work! :)

    It's a pity animals are still hunted for certain body parts these days.

    I read that they put poison capsules into the horns so if a poacher tries to kill the Rhino for horn, it will be of no use to them. That is kind of effed up....:confused:

    What I gathered from that article was that it was quite an old rhino. Maybe sedation wasn't such a good idea for an old one?

    This article said they put in some kind of dye so that the horn is useless, and also some kind of insecticide that apprently kills ticks on rhinos, but makes humans sick.

    Right. Seems like they should have left the old guy alone... though I don't know how many years he had left, is killing him through sedation any better than his getting poached for his horn?

    Animals are always supposed to be grateful when we kill them for their own good - like when they take one for the team during culls and stuff like that. ;)

    Is sedation quick, or would there be time for regrets? It would kind of suck if you had to lie there for a while thinking "I don't want to go." At least the shotgun would be lights-out.

    It always boggles the mind when a commodity slowly turns into rarity but popularity just keeps on increasing. Especially if the market segment is the size of "many Asian males", ie. well into the millions range, and there's only a few animals left to share between them.

    Takes helluva lot of "But I AM the unique snowflake!!" thinking to justify that.
