    [​IMG] I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned around here yet.

    A complete legend. He was the only living New Zealander to feature on one of our notes. People used to get him to sign 5 dollar bills all the time.

    Quite possibly the greatest ever New Zealander. Certainly one of the only people I can think of for whom I have never heard a bad word spoken. So much more than just the Everest thing. The guy has been a role model for our nation for decades.

    And I'm not just saying all that because he's dead.

    :cry: What can be said? I never really knew much about the man and upon reading that article I can see why - a true humanitarian and hero who never played on his achievements but preferred to play them down.
    I always admired him for being the first to the top (maybe a little moreso because he's kinda from down this way) but certainly my admiration for the man has grown

    So I second the motion - to Sir Ed :beer:

    Truth be told, I never knew before today that Sir Edmund Hillary was from New Zealand. With the "Sir" preceeding his name I assumed (wrongly) that he was British. Godspeed Sir Ed :beer:

    Yeah, he was one of those guys that did loads of stuff but never seemed to make much fuss about any of it. The Everest thing was really just a curtain call for a whole bunch of other things.

    This is pretty much the only story in town in this country. It takes up the whole newspaper.

    our country is too small any time a famous New Zealander , or militant personal dies it's a huge deal here, but he was a national icon so it's cool.

    I remember thinking of him as a great hero when I was a child, only for his Everest climb, but now that I've read some of the articles about him after his death I think of him as an even greater hero. A great man has died - condolences to New Zealand and to all his friends around the world. :(

    Yeah, can't be a "just", my mistake. I was trying to say that Sherpa Tenzing died in '86 or there abouts, but Sir Edmund was still alive until the other day.
