Same Items - Over and Over Again?!

    [​IMG] Is it just me, or did anyone else experience getting the same magical items over and over again? I did Charwood and up to the creator ruins in NW Woods and I've found 3 Staves of Curing and at least 4 of those bard gloves which give extra spells. It also seems that each of the escaped convicts leaves the same bracers upon death?! By the time I got to the third I started asking myself if they all had the same tailor or something. Such little things really annoy me, and NWN is full of them.

    [​IMG] Yeah, I keep getting the same assortment of magical items over and over again, most of which (as a monk) my character can't use. All in all, it's one of the problems I have with the SP campaign - too much treasure in general, and too much of the same treasure!

    It's also rather stupid to keep finding the same 'named' and supposedly uncommon items all the time. My character never has to spend any money in stores because he just finds all of the good stuff he needs. So-called special items should be rare finds, but I find them all the time. Oh well, just one of things I'll have to change in my own campaigns :p

    It seemed to me most treasure (especially from chests) was random. There are so many chests that had random magic treasure in them that I found quite a few things multiple times.

    One time, just to see how random it was, I saved just before opening a chest I knew would have a good magical item in it (it had a trap on it that Tomi couldn't disarm).

    I then sat there for a while reloading and opening that chest to see what would pop up, and I seemed to get some items more often than others, so it may be more complicated than just a single random number deciding what shows up.

    There may be multiple random numbers needed with different weights (eg. 10% of the time you get a random item from the really good list, 50% of the time you get a random item from the mediocre list etc.)

    To my experience loading a saved game kills the magical items you were supposed to get. For example I found a katana +2 in a container.. went to next room and got my arse beaten up so I reloaded. Now the container had 20 gold pieces and crap like that.
    This has happened pretty often or then I'm just paranoid, but after loading a game all containers give you junk, which you had expected to give something magical.

    But to the actual topic.. no I haven't had a problem with getting same item all the time. Only powerful item I've had twice (at the end chapter 2 now) is a cloak of protection +4.

    I have found the greater gloves of spellcraft about 8 times now (beginning of chapter 2), and it is starting to piss me off.

    And I never find anything uselfull for my wizard. It's usually splint mail this or two bladed sword that and those items are too heavy, so I have to go sell them in the temple of Tyr everytime (and pay the 150gp to get back to where I was)

    Anyone need Gloves of Discipline? I have a 20 for 1 sale going on ... :rolleyes:

    I have the same beef. The Random Item thing is a good idea, but they could have tweaked it a bit.

    I'll expect more from the ALFA DM's ;) :good:

    Actually I was a little pissed of by that too - and when I ended up with 6 Netherese Greataxes I sometimes eventually decided just to reload in hope to find something actually useful for me :holy: you may call this cheese but on the other hand it is a little odd to have 6 identical items with unique names :D

    And I agree with Mathetais - I expect more from the ALFA DMs ;)

    The random item generator takes the PC's level into account and there is only a limited selection of items of 'appropriate' level. So it is very easy, especially at lower levels, to get multiples of the same item. I suspect, too, that your character class might weight the selection in some way but I'm not positive.

    Anyway, its an unfortunate consequence of them trying to add replay value by not fixing the rewards found in advance.

    LOL barrels and chests! They're everywhere. There're too many of them. And you can't afford to bypass any of them as there might be a quest specific item or a key, you never know. I feel compelled (I can't help it :D) to open/bash/lockpick and check hundreds of chests/barrels all the time. If I didn't know better, I'd dare speak the name Diablo. This is the single most annoying thing in the SP modules imo. Besides, all those dying, poor hungry people in the streets.. all they have to do is go check out a few of the barrels that're all over the place and they'd be rich :p

    Not only that, I also found the number of magic items somewhat lacking. They could've at least added in masterwork/silver weapons/armor etc.

    The random (big) treasures are related to your race/class/alignment, which is nice. I found at least 5 angry soul clubs btw as a wizard :D (+3 enchanted, cast fear on strike and 1d6 lightning damage i think, very nice but..)

    They did deliberately add some diablo-ish elements to the single player game play. I guess they figured it would help sales with the general crowd, while those of us who are keen on D&D were really buying the game for the toolset anyway.

    Fortunately, none of those elements in inherent to NWN gameplay. Respawn, stone of recall, random treasure, barrel fests, etc all have to be deliberately placed in any module created.

    I always seem to get a lot of Cloak of Protections and that pisses me off because I already have the best one so I don't need them.:mad:

    If it isn't boxes/chests/drawers I'm opening it's yet another door. :rolleyes:

    I'm bored silly at this stage. Some more trolls to slap around before getting to the next chest? Ughh! I'm gonna be... :sick:

    Ah yes, the loot. I think I must be the most unlucky person alive. I never find anything useful. That random generator is set on 1-10gp for me. The few times I find anything magical and interesting it is a set of heavy armour for my dualwielding rogue/fighter...
    But I have just started chapter 2 so it might change. I do have found 10+ gloves of concentration.

    Well, while I don't know why they put so many of those barels/boxes/chests all over the place, I can see why they might have. Areas look rather sparse when building. I know I've added alot of boxes and whatnots to the areas I've built (NOW I have to go back and figure out how to take all the treasure out of them. Bioware should have made a few crates and barrels that weren't openable, just for placing around...for looks and all. Just my opinion, but why knows. Maybe Bioware has just sold out that much in trying to apease the Diablo market *sigh*.

    I had roughly the same experience as Pretend. The treasure in chests would be very good the first time, and any subsequent time, it would be trash.

    The huge number of treasures is to increase sales with the powergaming and D2 crowds. It was the same deal with Baldur's Gate 2.

    I have not, however, been getting the same items over and over again. Mostly it's gold and potions with my cleric. I'm pretty sure that we did discuss the class weighting of random items in an earlier thread, and it seems that a consensus was reached that different classes get different items.
