Nashkel Mines, level 2, he runs up yelling "Save me!", but despite my best efforts, he Always gets killed. Is there nothing I can do to save him?

You can pause when entering the level and withdraw your party to the shadows (out of sight) then draw his attention to you and he comes to you to ask his plea - voila your free to kill the goblins (now around the corner) without getting Beldin killed. Kivan adds a comment and a reward.

    Cheers

I think I was able to save him once. It was tricky but I used area effect spells to either kill of of immobilize his attackers. It was a long time ago so I cannot really remember how I did it that well but I am certain I did.
