    I was going through the list of d/l's for BG1/2 and IWD1/2 and was simply overwhelmed.

    Can someone give me a list of necessary patches, tweaks etc before I d/l mods for those 4 games if it wouldn't be too much trouble?

    The only really "necessary" installs are the official patches. Anything else comes after that and is optional.

    Unofficial patches (eg. Baldurdash or the G3 Fixpack for BG2) are highly recommended as well.

    Aside from that, as Tal says, everything is optional. If you want to know what people like, a search of the appropriate forum will yield plenty of results (especially the BG2 forum).
