    [IMG] Okay.

Problem: Friday evening, my connection to my ISP went down. I *thought* it was a dropped connection, blah-blah and decided to power cycle the modem like I was taught. I did it, the lights were blinking correctly on both the modem and routers. No internet. :(

I ask my husband, who knows lots more about computers than me, WTF is going on. He does another power cycle. Neither of us can connect. Hubby tells me his dad had worked it so you did not need to power cycle anymore, but click on a program on one of the laptops in order to reconnect to the internet.

Question: Is it possible for a (stupid) software program to override a power cycle? I mean, since I did not use the program (and have no bloody clue how) on Friday (and we did not use it for Saturday, Sunday and Monday), but unplugged the modem and router(s) like I was taught, would that mess things up so bad? I believed (in relation to computers) that a physical disconnect by jerking out the power plug from the socket would prevent a program from doing what it's "supposed" to do.

Key Notes: This laptop was not here on the weekend. His folks went out of town and took it with them. Are they playing Big Brother with us? Am I being reduced to a jabbering Neaderthalette by a stupid program? :grr:

So if I understand your post correctly, you have a program that "fixes" the modem so you don't have to go through a power cycle? :skeptic:

That sounds far fetched, unless the program just does a "soft restart" on the modem...which may or may not fix the problem. But don't take my word for it...when things go awry with my modem, I do the usual power cycle, and if that doesn't fix it, I call India (I mean Qwest branded MSN tech support) and try to understand what they're trying to say. :bad: :rolling:

Apparently, the laptop is working as a server if I understand correctly. Hubby went to run the program last night in order to get back online and found out the laptop was shut off.
