I just played a M/T through most of Ch 2 with a party of 3 but have decided to begin anew and try to go solo. I was curious though to see if anyone had any suggestions regarding weapon proficiencies? I think the Short Bow is one I'll take though I suppose sling with Everard might be ok. I'm more curious about weapons to backstab with. Since I'm going solo I'm not going to be concerned with the niceties about how fair it is to backstab with Fury or anything like that. Suggestions?

With a Short bow you will get 2 shots per round, with a Sling you get only one. Plus, a sling of Everard costs 25k when you can get Tansheron's bow for 4500.

Celestial Fury is good, but to get you need to win quite a battle. I recommend the Belm: you get an extra attack per round, which is exactly twice more than you actually have :). Plus it is free for the taking at the earliest stage of the game.

I personally think that Trademeet is the easiest and the cheesiest quest in the game because you get a bunch of EXP, gold, magic items just for doing this:

    ***** SPOILERS *****

    1) arrive at the Grove, talk to the helpful druid
    2) use your potion (ring) of invisibility
    3) just stroll through the area to the Ogre Tower and take Belm
    5) recruit Cernd and kick Ihtafeer's butt with the werewolf (your THAC0 will not be good enough to even hit the Rakshasa and they are immune to low-level spells)
    6) ask Cernd to challenge Faldorn and just observe, then head back to Trademeet for boni.

I've just finished that lot with a solo sorcerer.

I have to admit I used Cernd for both the parts suggested, but I did wipe floor with everything else on the way in. None of that invisible stuff here. My worst pick so far was not to pick invisibility at level 2. Thought I would wait for the staff of Magi. Could be a while then.....

Not happy that Sunfire don't wipe floor with Ihtafeer and cronies. Very happy that they can't hit Fire elementals..... Allowed me to let Cernd snuff it after summoning one. Couldn't be bothered to get one from Athkatla where I'd left the spare scrolls.

Sunfire otherwise rocks when there is no party to worry about! Can't wait for the spell trigger to load 'em up! Ouch, Ouch, Ouch, dead....... Might slip in a Greater Mallison first though just to help things along.

At least that last part is on topic. Solo magic user of any form. Sunfire. Say no more.

I'm currently soloing a m/t, and will shortly be wiping out Bodhi's nest. Not surprisingly, the most important combat tactic is backstab, so the missile weapon is less important than ensuring you have good backstab abilities. I am using short bow (Tuigan bow), and use it when I want to keep away from an enemy I can't backstab - lack of melee ability is a major drawback for a m/t.
I think getting Celestial Fury early on will be too difficult, so short swords are the weapon of choice at first. There are plenty of these about, though I think Kundane +2 in the Planar Prison is best because of the speed factor. The Planar Prison also gives the Boots of Speed, which makes this an important quest to do early - it is difficult, but the reward is great. With good stealth, you can run in and out of shadows and kill an enemy with backstabs before they can even attack you. Cheesy, perhaps (though completely justifiable); slow, definitely; but worth it. Some enemies will need blunt weapons, or greater than +2 enchantment, so go for quarterstaffs so you can get the +4 staff lying around, and possibly the Staff of the Magi. Whether you consider it correct to use the quarterstaff for backstabbing is up to you.
Your spells should complement your abilities. Invisibility will be useful if you need to check a hostile area for traps (as you can't hide in shadows and locate traps). Non-detection will eliminate True Sight. You won't need many damaging spells, as you should expect to use backstab to kill most opponents. Magic missile, of course, stops their spells. Summoning spells will get you help when there are too many enemies. There is nothing wrong with scouting ahead, locating a group of monsters, retreating, summoning a group of your own, then drawing the enemy to your summoned help. Other spells - it's up to you.

I have started an illusionist-thief a few days ago and I'm curently organizing my eforts to exploit the bug to have two strongholds  :D (silly me forgot in which order to start the quests). I don't solo though - she's sided by a halfling assassin (IMO the better wizardslayer), halfling cavalier, halfing archer (the latter ones are trusty vets from older games) and Jaheira at the moment (will be booted for Valygar who'll be booted for Mazzy :D )

Svenia Svensson (*not* romancing Jan Jansen :D ) - a lvl-9/9 gnomish illusionist-thief - I think that combo fits weman

str-12 (I didn't want to roll for ages)
    dex-18
    con-16 (she lacks hitpoints :( )
    int-19
    wis-17
    chr-8 (18 with that ring of course ... ;) )

    My current equipment is:
-robe of the good archmagi (better than elven chain: better protection, no mali, saving throw bonus - looks not half as cool though) -> as soon as I have the robe of the aprenti I'll take that one ...
-soon I'll have bracers of defence AC 3 -> as soon as I have the robe of the aprenti I'll wear other stuff instead
    -boots of stealth
    -cloak of protection +1
    -girdle of inertial barrier
-my ranged weapon or choice are darts (can be used with a buckler, 3 attacks per round, surprisingly effective)
-Arabane's sword, maybe until I get my hands on Kundane (though I might give that to my archer ... dunno yet ...)

I have so far completed: Circus, Maer'Var's guild (though I don't have the stronghold yet), trademeet-quests, ployer- and harper-quests and I'm going to try the planar sphere quest, when I found out about the right order of strongholds ...). After that I'll probably head for the thief stronghold, slaver quest and the de'Arnise-keep.
