Similar to Jukka's post in the BGII forum, what are ideal THAC0s and AC requirements for your frontline tanks in Baldur's Gate? And what items etc are required to get to these levels?

Can't remember exact numbers, but the equipment is as follows ...

    Full Plate
    Ring of Protection +2
    Helm of Balduran
    Cloak of Balduran
Large Shield +1, +4 vs Missiles (might be a +2 around)

    Longword +2 : Varscona
Gauntletts of Weapon Expertise (or specialization - can't remember)

... in BG1 it is very simple. Get the best equipment you can at the time. Use the best non-magical armour plus a ring for the saves. You can get Full Plate in Beregost or from the fighter in the Bandit Camp. Get some Ankheg Plate to tide you over from Nashkel.

Well, if you want to talk IDEAL, then I'd make two revisions to Bard's list - get Drizzit's weapons - as they are +3 weapons, and one of his scimitars lowers your AC by 2, and there is a +2 large shield somewhere in Durlag's Tower, although I don't remember exactly where (although it's in one of the lowest levels of the keep).

    My PC Fighter had...

    Full Plate: base AC 1
    DEX 18: -4 AC
    RoP +2: -2 AC
    Helm of Balduran: -1 AC
    Cloak of Balduran: -1 AC
    Large Shield +2: -3 AC
    Defender +5: -2 AC

Total AC -12, +4 to saves. In a party, it makes more sense to spread out some of those items so more than one tank has a decent AC. My best THAC0 was like -2 IIRC.

@Aldeth: yeah, but you've got to be really evil to get both of them. You get get the +3, by just pickpocketing him.

Also, if you play a Paladin, you could use Protection from Evil to lower your AC by 2 more points. Does it up your THAC0 as well, as this would compensate for the Paladins higher THAC0?

There are also the belts which would improve AC depending on what you wanted defending against. For melee, probably Golden Girdle (vs Slashing) or Girdle of Bluntness? You can also use Boots of Avoidance for extra AC vs missile weapons.

Potions of Giant Strength would lower THAC0 even further and increase damage by quite a lot.

For a melee fighter, use throwing axes for ranged to keep a shield at all times. Plus, you get a magical throwing axe in BG itself.

It's in the deepest level if I remember correctly; in a chest.

I don't really care for planning 'tank' concept (additionally, I don't like the term itself). It's obvious that in BG1, an unenchanted Full Plate, Cloak & Helm of Balduran, Ring of Protection +2 and Large Shield +2 is optimal. For two-handed ranged fight, when a bow/crossbow is used, a Two Handed Sword +3 can be reserved. (The set above is fully applicable on Minsc for example)
Of course one could say that all these things aren't obvious for those who've played BG less times, but they should explore everything on their own, it's the real fun (and doesn't kill the roleplaying side of all this)
