Tech help!

Discussion in 'Whatnots' started by DragonSlayer21, Jul 18, 2001.

  1. [IMG] My computer won't allow me to defragment my disk. Whenever I try I get the message that there is not enough memory to complete the task.
I have 128mb ram, and have no programs running in the back. I have even tried turning off the screensaver and take away my desktop picture. Nothing helps.

Any ideas on what may be causing this and how I could fix it, cause this is really starting to bug me...

How full is your disc drive? It may be complaining that there's not enough space available to rearrange everything.

You usually need about 15% of your hard drive free to defragment.

  4. I recently formatted my entire harddisk, and tried defragmenting it before installing anyting else than windows. So I can't see that that's the problem.

safe mode is a good idea, but it doesnt always work, try running it in dos, it almost never fails

  7. I tried safe mode and it didn't work.
I'm not sure I know how to run it in dos or even if it is possible. What do command do you write?

    I think it's just "Defrag C:"

At least, that's what it used to be in some old version of dos that I had.

that is correct according to my ms-dos 5.0-6.22 reference guide the command looks like this:

    <C:>defrag <drive>

  10. No, didn't work either. I tried running it in dos safe mode and all I got was a message that says that this program need's windows to run, so I tried running the command line in a window, and get the message that I don't have enough memory.

Is there perhaps some other program that I can download to defrag my disk?

(I am so close to just take out a really big hammer right now and solve this problem once and for all)

    have you try doing this:

first go to the folder where the file is, then open up the properties, go to the memory tab and on all the choices other than the first one pick 4096, this should work, if that doesnt work make a boot disk, and if that doesnt work just screw it.
