Ok, has anyone else created a bunch of different new TOB games just to see what various character classes are like at high level? I was messing around with it to see if it would be neat (for me, anyway) to play a druid or a paladin or a cleric and so forth.

    Minor SPOILER (sort of)...

I ran the character just up to the point of the first test in the Pocket Plane where all of the various bad guys came out of the woodwork at me and had varying levels of success with different classes.

The paladin I tried did ok, but was nothing to write home about. My shapeshifter got killed. My archer was ok, but he only started off with a few (20 or 40 - I forget) arrows which he used up pretty quickly (he was kicking A and taking names up to that point though). I messed with a kensai and he hit like a freak, but was continuously gulping down his meager supply of healing potions.

The nastiest three I tried were berserker (no surprise there), cleric (lots of buffing spells plus Holy Might plus blade barrier plus Flail of Ages = one nasty blender o' death), and assassin. Though the assassin was only able to backstab once or twice (small room - tough to hide in shadows without some monster peeking), his poison ability worked *much* better than I anticipated. Poisoned Firetooth works great when wearing speedboots.

As a result, I started a new SOA game (of course) with a ranger dualed to cleric for his high-level clerical butt-kickability.

For just solo stuff, I tried playing a Fighter/Mage and it worked really well. I was dual-wielding with the boots of speed and some stoneskins, unfortunately you don't get very many good swords if you start ToB from scratch. That first room is pretty easy though. :D
