    IIRC, Gore claimed that "I took the initiative in creating the Internet" while on a Senate committee. This was then deliberately misquoted, bent out of shape and widely ridiculed by certain political opponents during the 2000 presidential campaign. This might very well have cost Al Gore the presidency. But I suppose this is a topic for the AoLS... :)
