    Cheap cost of human life. It's cheaper to pay the families of those who die than invest millions in safety.

    I don't know guys... It's not like this stuff ONLY happens in China. In the last couple of years I remember this happening in Chilie, Peru, and even right here in the US of A (West Viriginia I think). Now I'm not saying China is tip-top in terms of its safety record by any stretch of the imagination. What I am saying is that mining is an inherently dangerous business, and the safety laws in most countries are insufficient in the best of circumstances to prevent loss of human life.

    It would be more appropiate to say "the dangers of being a miner", with China merely being the latest example.

    Not quite... it's by far the worst in China from what I've read, and most instances of it get covered up by the corrupt local and/or mining authorities, not to mention the desire by the government to get as few such events into the news as possible and to bury them as quickly as possible because they make China look bad.

    Btw, I don't think that the cost of human life in Peru or Chile is really much different from China's.

    And mining safety laws are definitely strict enough in most non-backward countries. Heck, they're probably strict enough in most countries - but laws are only as good as their enforcement. If there's nobody inspecting the mines it's naive to expect that many (most?) of them wouldn't ignore certain safety measures that are deemed too expensive. Also, corruption is a major problem in China so I'm sure that plenty of inspectors are willing to overlook certain safety issues in exchange for a modest compensation...
