Alex walked outside. It was early in the morning, the new sun just rising. It made the air glow orange and purple. So many gases filled the atmosphere it was hard to see the sky anymore. Ruble of buildings, vehicles and people alike cluttered the old streets of Sydney. The war had ended two weeks before and even after all the time Alex hadn’t found a single living soul. Every day was the same.

The boy would awake from in his makeshift bed just before sunrise every morning. He would get changed then leave what remained of his home in suburban Sydney. Outside he would watch the sunrise and the veil of fumes become visible. After the sun was up enough to see the streets properly, Alex would make his way to the old Homeless shelter. The shelter. It was many minutes away from his home, but was also the only place he had found food so far. Of course, it was probably contaminated, but what in the world wasn’t anymore? The entire city was a throbbing, chemical heap. And Alex had to make his life work again.

The shelter still had a roof, and that was a plus. Alex had thought of moving there to sleep, but had not yet allowed himself to leave his home behind. It was an old building, all rotten and rusty, even before the war. And now, sitting at one of the old tables eating cold beans, Alex wondered what life had been like here before the ‘End’. Being only twelve years old, the young boy had never explored the city any further then his home and school. Seeing what was left kept him wondering if things were actually better then before. His thoughts, however, were disrupted by a sudden sound outside.

The last thing our hero hears is the laughing of the vultures circkling above his head, was it all a nightmare?

The truth has been hidden from him for all those years and now that he is dead, it finally shows it's muddy face. Reality is a mushroom with extra cheese!

 

But the paradox is that everyone hated macaroni and cheese. So what was it all about. Maybe the mushroom can tell him...
