I assume you mean the wild mage? if so, your playing the best mage class. He is a little random, but you'll be able to get three spells available only to him... i forget what there called, (dweomer shield?) but two are in the 1st level, and their icons are colorful... purple and orange if i remember correctly. basically, cast the one of the two shielding ones before battle, they will basically neglagate the wild magic surges you'd usually get. He's the best mage because the remaining spell of the 3 basically grants you a chance to cast any spell in your spellbook. As its a lv 1 spell, and it can cast lv 9 spells, its quite valuable. Hmm... my memories getting vague with age...
Now, if you did mean wind mage, im afraid my post is full of emply promises ;)

This should be in the TOB forum, methinks.

Actually the 3 spells are Nahal's Reckless Dweomer (level 1), Chaos Shield (level 2) and Improved Chaos Shield (level 7?). The Chaos Shields either cancel the chance of a wild surge, or improve the chance of getting a positive surge (I keep forgetting which it is). Nahal's allows you to cast any spell that you have scribed in your spellbook, but it has a very high chance of misfiring and not casting the spell; of course this is why the Chaos Shields are here, and as you go up in levels your chance of getting the spell you want improves too.

It's a great class to play with. Oh, and the wild mage also gets an extra spell slot per level like specialists, but without having to forgeit an opposition school, meaning they get the bonus and can still scribe all spells.

Ziad has it pretty much correct -Chaos Shield (lvl. 2) adds 15 to your dice roll on the wild surge chart (out of 100). Improved Chaos (lvl. 7) Shield adds 25.

Ordinarily the wild mages level is added on the the surge - the spells are there to improve it further.
