I would like to know if there are minimum requirements for thieves in order to be able to cast spells from scrolls. My Assassin ( Int 11, Wis 9)is still in BG1 and has found all the tomes. Should I increase his Int and Wis or could I give the tomes to the NPC casters?
I remember that Minsc used to have problems with reading scrolls but I don't quite remember if this was due to his low Wis.
So, are those stats good enough?

I don't believe that there are any prerequisits, once you get the use any items feat you should be able to read from scrolls.

Well, since he posted in the SoA forum, you can't get that in this game. So I don't think your thief will ever be able to read scrolls. Paladins, rangers, druids and priests can read cleric scrolls if they have enough wisdom IIRC.

Yeah, this should really be in the BG forum.

Anyway, Imoen (as a thief) in BG can use wands while other characters can not. It's because her Intelligence is so high, I believe. I don't know what the prerequisite number of Int has to be to use wands outside a bard or wizard is. She cannot use scrolls though unless dual-classed to wizard.

Sorry if I picked the wrong forum. I choose SoA because I found this in Planet Baldur's Gate's class description: " At 10th level, thieves' gain the limited ability to use clerical and magical scrolls" so I thought that thieves could alraedy use some scrolls without UAI.
I also found in the BG2 manual on page 226 that a Wisdom lower than 12 involves the risk of a casting failure but it doesn't mention if this refers to casting memorized spells, spells from scrolls or if it is implemented at all.
Sorry if this is a bit confusing but so far Imoen has been the best ( and only ) thief I ever had so I never really cared about this kind of questions.

This is probably a bit off topic, but this shouldn't be in the BGI forum, as the question is about ramifications that only come into play in BGII. If you're planning on playing with only SoA, then this is the forum to post it in (and the answer would be that your assasain won't be able to cast spells anyway, and so won't benefit from the extra WIS and INT in that aspect).

If you plan to install ToB it is advised that you post in the ToB forum, even if your asking about SoA related material (as there are some tweaks/minor rule changes that effect the SoA potion of the game, and also you will be privy to advice relating to the development of your character at higher levels...plus more people are active in the ToB forum). The answer to the ToB qs. is that Intelligence and Wisdom play no part in casting spells with the Use Any Item (UAI) High Level Ability (HLA).

So, will you be playing BG2 with ToB installed?

The Wisdom risk of spell failure wasn't implemented into any games I know of, and it should only apply to Clerics and Druids anyway.

You need 10 INT to be able to use general protection scrolls (green ones) and restoration scrolls. Also wand of magic missiles can be used bu anyone with 10+ INT IIRC.
