I bought a DVD for my computer a while ago and had no trouble getting it to work. Now some days ago I remembered that I had forgotten a cd in my old CD-rom so I replaced the DVD so that I could get the disc out, which I did without any problem.

But now when I put back the DVD player it's like my computer can't find it....

The drive doesn't show up in Windows and any cd/dvd I try to play doesn't do anything.

I've checked so that everything is properly plugged in.
Does anyone have any advice on how I might fix this?

If you are sure that you have connected the drive correctly (sometimes the ribbon cables in IDE drives are not notched to fit only in a particular position, you may have put the cable upside-down), open the Device Manager and see if there are any DVD or CD drives listed.

Remove them from the list and reboot the system. Windows should find the drive when restarting, and should ask you for the appropriate drivers if it can't recognize it. Ensure that there are no CDs in the drive when this happens.

System Restore? Try bringing the system back a couple of days.

Is the cable plugged into the mobo? I find that they often manage to work themselves loose if your changing the drives.
Try the old cd drive. If it works then there's probably something wrong with the DVD drive. If it doesn't then theres porbably a problem with the mobo or the cable.
Also for future reference, there is a small hole of the face plate of all cd/dvd drives. Jamming a paperclip into this will open the drive manually and will work even if your pc is turned off or the drive is not plugged in at all.
