This debuts tonight on channel 4 (UK). Its already out in the US, so I wanted to ask if its 'any good'? Of course I could simply watch it tonight and find out for myself, but I would like the opinions of fellow SP members.

America Ferrera looked lovely in 'Real Women Have Curves'

 

Supposedly it is a popular show here in the U.S. I watched one episode and didn't think it was anything spectacular. I suspect that the rave reviews are because people want to like it, kind of like that show with the female president. I'm curious what will happen when the hype dies down.

 

I gave it a chance and I thought it was just okay, nothing special. Still, its better than the reruns of Ellen

 

I can't believe how successful this soap is.
It started about 5 or 6 years ago and the original idea is from Venezuela IIRC. It is the typical story of the 'poor ugly' girl who in the end will get the good looking guy and of course, she will look amazing at last.
It was so successfull in Argentina (the original version, in South America we can understand other countries Spanish, not like Spain) that they did another version with a guy instead a girl.
In Spain is been re-aired for the second time with another story (imagine that, same actors, same names but a bit of different story) and every 2 or 3 episodes, they make artirsts cameos (Bisbal, Julio Iglesias and some local stars). Is a bit annoying seeing her in adds in the streets, in buses, hearing that there are mobile tones, etc, etc.

Here, we also have a tv-program about a girl who is supposed to be ugly, but in fact she looks quite okay except for a pair of big glasses and a silly haircut.

Uglier people can be seen in English sitcoms (little britain, men behaving badly, bottom etc)

 

Of course she's not ugly, she has to look amazing at the end of the story
I told my wife just the other day that if you give the add too much credit, then anybody using glasses and those stuff in the teeth should be considered ugly?

 

I was wondering about Ugly Betty too because it seemed popular. Although not as popular as Heroes. I still haven't seen that either. From what I gather, Ugly Betty seems like a fairly predictable show..

 

It is very a predictable show. Right from the start, you can tell whats going to happen and its not even funny, its almost as bad as the English 'comedy' Shameless.

 

Oh..I'm glad I didn't watch it then! (Although I've never heard of 'Shameless' )

 

I like it. She looks kinda cute even with the bracers and glasses.... and of course she is so very sympathetic and nice. I guess its supposed to show that it is the insides that count?

By the way, the actress showed up at a Golden Globe thing (or something similar), and she is - while not "gorgeous" - very a cute and pretty girl.

 

Is it just me or does it seem a tad similar to The Devil Wears Prada? I haven't seen either (just heard them in the background whilst playing something.

 

I guess so..although I don't really know the storyline for Ugly Betty and I haven't seen The Devil Wears Prada either...haha..
I saw a huge Ugly Betty banner in Westfield today...I didn't really noticed how she looked cause it was far away.
