My wife was on our new PC, which came with Windows 7. She turned on the computer and she got an alert, saying we need to register Windows as our copy is an unauthorized copy. It even added text in the bottom right corner of my desktop saying the same thing, right above the taskbar. So I clicked the link from the Windows alert and re-registered. The noticification went away and so did the text on my desktop.

I was wondering if anyone would know of a reason why that would happen? I bought my system via Gateway and it has ran fine for about 2 months. I haven't experienced any problems since this alert, but I thought it was very odd that we rec'd it in the 1st place.

I wonder if Gateway forgot to register your copy before it left their warehouse. I know we had to do that to my wife's upgrade copy on her HP notebook. But if it was factory installed you should not have to register windows.

That's the thing. When I got my Pc, I went to setup and got a black screen when starting, though I had Windows showing at startup, it wouldn't get to the desktop. I had to repartition myself to get it running, after several useless attempts at trying to get help from their support. It's the 3rd Gateway I have owned and they are usually very helpful. Not this time. But for repartitioning, that in itself was no problem and I have been running fine for a while since doing so. I thought the whole non-registered warning weird or possibly spyware or something like it had penetrated my pc and was trying to get me to link to something. But since I registered it online, it's been fine. Hmmph.
