Like I described in my other thread, I am right now in the process of setting my new hard drive/computer up. However, I can't seem to connect to the internet. I've tried basically everything I can think of, every option on the controll panel (every option that I know what it is, that is). I have a broadband/fibernet connection. I don't remember this being so hard the last time I had to set up a new computer...

Try booting with Knoppix and seeing if it works.

If it doesn't, 95% of the cases it's a hardware or hardware configuration problem.

Usually you'd want to turn all options off, pick "Internet Connection Wizard" from Accessories -> Communications and set it to connect through LAN.

Doesn't seem to work... The light just above the network cable (the end that is connected to the computer) shines red. What does that mean? A physical error or just that you can't connect to the internet for some reason?

Perhaps the driver for the ethernet hardware wasn't installed?

Look in Device Manager and see if it thinks your ethernet controller is working properly.

Since I'm close to being an idiot infront of the computer, I have to ask; how do I do that Blackthorne?

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> and you will have the network interface cards under "Network adapters".

As for troubleshooting this problem, it would be really helpful to know more details. Broadband/Fibernet does not really tell anything. What is the connection type? What devices do you have that you use to connect? How are they configured? How is it connected to your computer? ...

Problem solved. It was indeed the drivers that was not installed. They were on a deceptively labeled CD, with (sort of) complicated installation routines. Thanks for the help everyone, I really appreciate it.

I remember how I once tried to get my Broadband connection to work. I was very helpless with computers back then. It goes without saying, but all my efforts were in vain. Then my mom phoned to her friend, whose son had been in the IT-business for two years, and was quite and expert. When he arrived, he had a smirk on his face, saying that this wouldn't take long. But it still did, nothing worked. He went trough DOS commands, checked all kinds of files very deep down in the folders, basically did everything he humanly could. And then, after two hours of struggling in vain, when he had abour fifteen minutes till he had to go, he finally gets it. The heavenly man sighs once, laughs happily, and selects "don't ask password" in the basic settings. Actually, we both laughed when it all came to be so obvious.
Sometimes the simple solutions are the hardest :D
