From time to time when I'm sitting infront of my computer doing whatever, the computer just shuts down in an instant without any warning. After it has shut down, the power button just blinks with a orange light (it's usualy green when the computer is normal), and you can't turn it on untill you have shut down the power completely and turned it on again after a few minutes.
Any idea about what this is caused by?

Sounds like it could be overheating, some PCs have thermostats in them and shut down if overheating.

Could be overheating, but when it happened this morning I had only had the computer going for a few minutes, and I was only browsing web pages.

Sounds like a power or wiring failure.

Dodgy memory, motherboard, software and countless other things may be causing such a problem as well.

But do check the cables first? At times it saves a lot of time looking for the simplest answer first. ;)

Check the manual! If the power LED is changing to a different color, then the computer knows something is wrong, and finding the right manual (probably the mother board's manual if it's a custom build, or the "system" manual if it's from a major manufacturer) might tell you exactly what's wrong. :thumb:

You might have a failing power supply, and the unstable voltages might be causing the mobo to shut the system down to prevent damage. :rolling:

If there's a problem with CPU cooling, the system can overheat in seconds. If you've got temperature display in BIOS, go into the BIOS as soon as you turn on the system and stay there for a minute, keeping an eye on the temperature.

If that's not the problem, you could get a program to check for errors in your RAM (there might be one that shipped with your motherboards drivers). If it's not the RAM and not overheating, then it's very possible your power supply is dying. If this is the case, you should considering changing it as soon as possible - a power supply failure is NOT something you want to happen.

    Actually that's a VERY good idea :)
