What Is The Best Virus Scanner?

    Most consistent answer will be my new software! Many thanks guys for any replies!

    (currently using, Bit Defender, not too imrpessed)

    BTW: Doesn't have to be 'free' software. Whichever one you want to recommend I can get a hold for free anyway... I'll leave it there before Tal glares at me.

    Basically, anything by Symantec or McAffee is pretty good, just as long as you keep updating it.

    Depends if you just mean 'vrus scanner' or whether you're including all the other defences required these days (firewalls, spyware detectors etc). I find I need a variety of different tools (Zone Alarm, Ad-aware, Avast) installed in order to try and capture everything.

    Personally, I find that Norton does a pretty good job. I use the whole line.

    I make it a point not to buy anything you can get for free... and there are decent free virus scanners out there today. I've been using avast! for a few months now, and I'm quite happy with it. I've been using McAfee VirusScan before that.

    I find Norton is great for all types of internet security, whether it be virus scanners, firewalls, parental controls (yes, my parents did try that one once...) or adwear thingys.

    I think I'll give that Avast a go. I used Norton before and had bad experiences with it. And I found McAfee to be very system draining for some reason.

    I use F-Prot. Uses almost no resources, always on top with updates and is very thorough. It caught things that both Norton and McAfee missed.

    NEVER USE "PC-CILLIN"! (my case: i surfed the net for months without virus protection, I thought I wouldn't need any! I got "MS-Blast". I installed "PC-Cillin", got the updates, got rid of "MS-Blast" but mister Cillin quaratined over 1200 files (INCLUDING "NOTEPAD.EXE"!) Most of them were un-unquaratinable, un-deletable and of course... UNREPAIRABLE (and i had the latest updates!)... AND I HAD TO FORMAT MY HDD LOSING OVER 70GB OF VALUABLE INFORMATION!!!
    So currently I'm not using anti-virus programs, but when I will I will definetly use NORTON ANTI VIRUS (this the best!)

    I'm using Norton AV 2004 too, but just remember that the program tries to call home every day without your consent. (ZoneAlarm will warn you though: "LuComServer.exe is trying to access Internet.") If it weren't NAV, I would think it were malware. :p
