What's a good graphics card for NWN?

I have an Intel D845WN motherboard (manual says "only compatible with 1.5 V AGP cards, 2x/4x"), and I'm wondering what ATI Radeon card would work well with this motherboard to run both the game AND THE EDITOR. My Geforce 4 Ti 4200 ran the game fine since it came out, but it can't run half of the editor (WIN32 API failures left and right), and it's even giving me some trouble running the game now after almost three years of faithful service. :( So, if you've got an ATI Radeon that runs both the game AND THE EDITOR for you with no hassles, please e-mail tj_hoenecke@yahoo.com with specs and details, then I can do some online research to find out if that particular model is compatible with my motherboard. Thanks! :)

It's not about the graphics card.

The toolset is compatible with only Windows 2000/XP and requires 512mb of ram.

Your card is better than many new ones on the market, btw, so don't get rid of it unless you need the new technologies.

"The toolset is compatible with only Windows 2000/XP and requires 512mb of ram."

Are you sure about this? Did NWN ship this way, or is this only true of the SoU and/or HotU expansions (both of which I have)?

"Your card is better than many new ones on the market, btw, so don't get rid of it unless you need the new technologies."

Wow, that is amazing news, considering my card is almost three years old already! Guess it's time to just take it out and clean, upgrade to XP, and add another 256 stick of RAM....

The toolset's always been that way. It works fine for a while and with small modules under 98/ME. Move to a bigger module, and you'll see those WIN32 API failures left and right. It's mostly a memory issue AFAIK.

(Had them under 98SE with 512mb memory, now using w2k sp4 and don't see them anymore.)

And I have a GeForce 4 MX 440 (which is worse than any GeForce 4 Ti) and the toolset works well.

Well, thank you very much for opening my eyes! I think memory etc. is probably also behind why, lately, even regular play has been somewhat problematic. After all of the opening films load and the main menu appears, the menu screen flickers like crazy, right up through loading a saved game. At that point, if I ALTTAB out of the game and then back in again, the flicker is gone, and does not return for the rest of that play session. It will be nice to finally be able to use the whole toolset, too! :)

It runs fine under Win98SE except the script wizard doesn't work. It's actually an issue with video card drivers. If you update them, it should work properly (but, the script wizard won't work, period).

considering the age of the game, you should find that most modern graphics cards will suffice for both NWN and the aurora toolset nowadays

that said, you will find that you get superior performance from nVidia cards since the games 3D engine was, I believe, written by guys who had a lagre hand in writing the nVidia drivers, so there are elements within the engine that are optimised to take advantage of the nVidia architecture
