What's legal to put on a website?

Ok, so I'm in the process of making my own personal website.

One of the features of the site is going to be guides. Now, for these guides, I'm going to be taking screen-shots to help out...now, to ensure that the screenshots are relevent, I need to make sure that people reading the guide have the same version of the software I used when writing the guide. So is it legal to host someone elses' program on my site?

For example, I use Trillian v0.74f (which is free), and if someone has any other version, the guide will be pointless.

Keeping this in mind, what are the rules for this sort of thing?

Also, what about my avatar over there <--- ? I'd like to use him on my new site...that's leagal and stuff, right? :rolling:

Freeware = Distribute freely anywhere, any way, as long as there is no money in it.

So yes, if the program says it's freeware, then you can host it.

    Hmmm...good enough for me.

I'm going to making a detailed guide on installing/using Trillian IRC, so no one will have an excuse for *not* going to #sorcerers. :thumb: :p

Whatever I do though...I must make sure that my site does not become anything like what you'd find at myspace. I hate that place. :flaming: :rolling:

I suggest you'd just link to the download page at Trillian's site.

    @ Kitrax

If you are worried about law, the only way you can avoid breaking it at some point is by staying out from Internet. Sooner or later you run to a "copyright infrigment" and then your conscience will make you feel like a total über bastard (/said with a South Park accent). A pic without even a signature can be copyrighted, a slogan can be copyrighted, a logo can be copyrighted, a select piece of text can be copyrighted, and even methods can be copyrighted (in US).

So don't do it if law is of utmost importance to you, landcrab. Arrr!

Taza's solution is the best, really. You don't need to donate your own... well, SP's own, bandwidth to Trillian's cause. :D There's really no need for you to offer alternative distribution of Trillian and I can't tell you if it's legal for you or not without taking a look at their license agreement, terms of service or whatever such. It may be allowed, but it may be prohibited even if the program is free. No one, however, can do anything because of you just linking to that page. Link to the whole page rather than the file, though.

I would, but then everyone would have to dl the newest version, which is stupid, because it adds links to the things you type. I personally think that version 0.74f is the best version of Trillian. :rolling:
