I have finished Cloakwood and went there before going to BG. I did the upper four levels (not very tough), then left for Ulgath's Beard. From there I did the island, again, not too tough. Now I am going back to Durlag's to do the basement.
    My party:
    PC MC Fighter/Thief level 5,6 (I think)
    Minsc level 7
    Kivan level 7
    Branwen level 6 (I think)
    Dyna level 6
    Imoen DC thief/mage 4/5

I am surprised that it is not tougher.

You must be a good player then Jack. Good fortune in Amn if you plan to complete the series.

PS. The basememnt is where all the creepy stuff starts.

To be clear, I have not gone into the basement yet. I believe it will be a challenge.
I have played through BG1 twice before (but without ToTSC) when it first came out. I also played BG2/TOB, but not with my character from BG1.
This is my first pass through the entire series with the same character. I think my time in BG2/TOB prepared me to play BG1 again. It is not as hard as I remembered it.

I don't have TotSC.. couldn't buy this game anywhere... That's my biggest failure in the whole BG games, no Durlags Tower, no ToTSC.

Durlag's Tower is definitely worth to do - especially since it offers a ot of nice items and plenty of fun and XP.

I usually did the ToSC quests after finishing off the ironthrone goons in their mine in cloakwook, I was about pally lvl- 7 or 6 then and Durlag's tower was a tough nut then but IMO well playable.

I am in the middle of Durlag's Tower at the moment... I did all the upper floors and the basement up to the big lift and killed the wardens (probably the hard way, knowing my luck :p) all with my party of:
    Kagain lv.6
    Shar-Teel lv.6
    Yeslick lv.6/6
    Me (mc f/m/t)lv.5/5/6
    Coran lv.5/6
    Imoen lv.7
This is in Chapter 6, by the way.

I personally found TotSC just to be a little ad-on to feed people's appetite for more BG. If you already have BG2, don't waste your money. Mine came with it, so I'm not at fault :D.

P.S. Durlag's tower is very depressing! I'd rather watch open heart surgery .
