I think there is going to be trouble for the war effort. When people compare the damage Katrina has wrought, in billions of dollars, against the amount of money we have poured into Iraq, they are going to be upset; the visual and tactile sensation of how much that sum of money is worth -- over 300 billion for Iraq, I believe -- is going to cause the taxpayers to finally become truly upset.

If only this storm could have happened four years ago!

I think that the cost of human life in Iraq is much more important, than the actual cost of the war.

It will probably have the opposite effect than you suggest - if he does something good, it will take peoples mind of the Iraq war, but then again Bush has yet to show strong leadership, but he takes advantage of diversions to take peoples mind off his inability to act arrodingly to any situations that arises and failing that he causes his own diversions, such as invading Iraq, because he has yet find bin Laden. How many times has he cornered him in the mountains?

Then there's the simple, egoistic but undeniable thing: if people have such a big problem at home, will they be motivated to support an uncertain (both in motivation and effect) venture abroad. Sure, New Orleans will take people's minds off Iraq, but this might not be for the best for Bush.

The war effort has been floundering of late, with a majority of Americans believing that the war is not going according to plan:
