Hi all...this is regarding my OS crashing a couple of days ago.

It was working fine, but one fine morning when I switched my computer on, this is the error message I got:

[Keep in mind this is on a Blue Screen]
    --------------------------------------
    STOP:c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive(file):
    \Systemroot\System32\Config\software
    or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent or not writable.

    Beginning dump of physical memory.
    Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your sytem administrator or technical support group for further assistance.
    ---------------------------------------

Also of note, is that I am running Windows XP Home Edition which came pre-installed from Dell. The machine is a Dell Inspiron 9100:
    3.2 GHz P4
    1 GB DDR-RAM
    100 GB HDD
256 MB ATi Mobility Radeon 9800

I am travelling right now and my original Windows XP cd is not with me, so I couldn't boot up and use a restore point. Hence, I borrowed a Windows XP Professional Edition with SP2 CD from my cousin with who I am staying.

After installing that on a separate folder, I found that my computer booted up fine, which would rule out a hardware problem. Also, in the Professional install, none of my hardware is recognized. No sound, standard VGA 16 color display, etc etc. How do I fix this?

I would really, really want to restore my Home Edition install, because all my applications and settings are on that one, and I CANNOT lose those. The Professional install is just a temporary measure, so I have access to my data.

Help? How do I fix that error I'm getting?

That would be would be your best bet. Oh, and using the WinXP CD would do a repair...not a restore. You can do a system restore without the CD.

Try this: First try to boot up in Safe Mode under the messed up version of XP, then go Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
That'll bring up the system restore program. See if there's a date on the list before the registry got messed up to restore to.

If that fixes it, good! If not, you should try the CD way. Then go read this ...it'll be good for your system's overall health. :thumb: :rolling:
