    My Computer => Control Panel => Auto-update

    If you have it already installed and it didn't register it, the only option you have is to do it manually. Which is way too difficult. Which means you have to keep deselecting that option every time you want to update your OS.

    So SP2 is on you computer and now it wants you to actually install it? That's a quick fix: Find out where the patch file is and delete it. I don't know where it would be or what the installer file would be named, but the names listed on the Windows Update site should tell you.

    You actually kind of deserve this since you forgot the golden rule:
    Always turn Automatic Updates off completely, and leave them off! :rolling:

    ...Unless you are computer illiterate, in which case you shouldn't use Windows at all. ;)

    But what about all the other fixes and patches and programs it gets for me.
    Including IE 6 (now that was a waste of bandwith)
    and WMP10 (looks real cool don't it?)

    There should be two options to install the update - express and custom. If you select custom you can choose not to install SP2. It should then give you the option to never try to install that update again - choose this option. Windows update will then continue to download all other updates that you normally would have received without bugging you about SP2.

    Facts:
    1 - A bunch of nerds controlled my university IT department.
    2 - i cannot connect my pc to external network (the internet) unless i set my windows to autoupdate.

    they made this a policy so that we can get windows update as soon as possible in case of new worm spread. Even my linux geek friends recommands sp2. Unless you really know, i wouldn't suggest not to update.

    #1 if you install sp2 you *should* install it from cd AND in safe mode

    #2 before you install it make sure you backed everything up, got drivers 'n stuff and any sort of xp-cd including a repair-feature :pope:

    #3 if you have a prescott-processor get the official patch first

    #4 if you have a fujitsu make sure you have a recent bios
